What is the study about?

The purpose of the study is to gather information from teens about whether they see weight as something that affects or impacts their ‘quality of life’.

Quality of life is a term used to describe how you see your life is going and whether you feel content about your life.

One of the primary goals of the research is to create a weight-specific quality of life questionnaire that can be used by clinical and public health practitioners, educators and communities in order to improve services and programs for teens managing their weight.

Who can participate?

Any young person who meets the following criteria:

Ž 11-18 years of age

Ž Average or Above average weight

Ž African American, Caucasian or Mexican-American ethnicity

Ž If under 18 years of age, permission of parent/guardian to participate

What does participation involve?

Taking the ‘Describing Yourself’ survey will take about one hour of your time. The Project WQLT team will call you and your parent to determine your eligibility and set-up an appointment. Parent consent forms must be received before youth under 18 years of age can participate.

At the time of the appointment you will be asked to answer confidential questions on our survey. Only a study number appears on your survey and your answers are kept confidential. After the interview you will have your weight, height and waist circumference measured and receive $20 in cash or receive a $20 Fred Meyer gift certificate for your participation.

About 360 youth are participating in this phase of the study in Los Angeles, Seattle and Cuernavaca, Mexico.

What do I do if I want to participate?

Interested participants can call or email the study coordinator to do a phone screening to see if you are eligible to participate. If you are eligible, the study coordinator will ask you and your parent/guardian to fill out required study consent forms which we can mail to your house or fill out in person on the day of the meeting. Next, you and the study coordinator will set-up a meeting time at your school, house, library or another convenient location.

How long will the meeting take?

The study meeting will take about 1 hour.

Do I get anything for participating?

Each time you participate in a face-to-face meeting with a researcher you receive $20. You may also be selected at random to take a one-week retest survey by mail for which you can receive $15 Fred Meyer gift certificate.

A less direct benefit to you may be a sense of satisfaction in sharing your experiences with researchers developing a tool that can be used to promote improved quality of life for other teens.

Who is sponsoring the study?

The study is run by Dr. Donald Patrick, Director of the Seattle Quality of Life Group, in the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington.

The study is funded by the National Institutes of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney  Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health.
