WPA AWARDS: As usual, UW staffers collected a considerable number of awards in the recent Washington Press Association competition. The winners and their categories included: Feature Story in a Magazine, Tom Griffin, first for "Only a Game," Bob Roseth, third for "The Bark of the Buddha," and Nancy Wick, honorable mention for "Seeing Red." Publication Edited by Entrant, Tom Griffin, first for Columns. Page Layout, Magazine, Ken Shafer for Columns. Personality Profile, Jon Marmor, second for "Close Call." Headlines, Nedra Pautler, second for University Week. Feature Photos in a Publication Other than Newspapers, Jon Marmor, first for "Monkey Business," "Pomped Up," and "All in the Family." Four-Color Magazine, Non-Profit, Tom Griffin, Jon Marmor, Ken Shafer, first for Columns. News Releases, Greg Orwig, first for "Concrete Canoe," Joel Schwarz, third for "Baby Talk" and "History of Comets," Greg Orwig, third for "Alumnus Turns 100." Three News Releases with the Same Topic, Greg Orwig, second for "Software Robot," "Smogmobile" and "Chemical Sensors." Congratulations to all the winners.

KUDOS: Steve Scher, public affairs director at KUOW, has received a Jefferson Fellowship for Journalists. He will spend eight weeks in professional interchange, study and travel with five other print and broadcast journalists from the United States, along with journalists from Asian countries . . . Aeronautics and Astronautics Professor John Bollard has been awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit recognizing his work to promote public knowledge of New Zealand and its indigenous Maori culture . . . Communications Professor Roger Simpson won a Governor's Writer's Award for the book, An Evening in the Garden of Allah, which he co-authored with Don Paulson.
