drilling
Sound Transit is drilling for soil borings on campus along 15th Avenue Northeast to determine the soil conditions that will be encountered when they bore the tunnel for the transit system. The current proposed route crosses Portage Bay and moves north along 15th Avenue Northeast. The tunnel would be more than 200 feet deep near the UW. Commuters will use elevators at two stations to reach the transit, one at Northeast Pacific Street and 15th Avenue Northeast, and the other at 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 45th Street.

James Kerker
Senior mechanical engineering student James Kerker puts the UW Department of Mechanical Engineering’s race car through its paces during the endurance segment of the 1999 Formula SAE Competition in Pontiac, Mich. The Huskies logged the second fastest time in the endurance event, placing fifth overall in a field of 100 universities from around the world. The international competition, held in May, is an opportunity for students to compete with a formula racer they designed and built from scratch.
