IT TAKES A TEAM TO RAISE MONEY: To be successful in the competitive world of grant seeking, a principal investigator doesnt stand alone. For example, Tom G. Colonnese, assistant vice president for minority affairs and director of American Indian Studies, is principal investigator for the $32 million U.S. Department of Education grant for GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Project aimed at improving education attainment in the lower Yakima Valley, but he credits a long list of people for the proposals success; a $1 million Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Program grant and a $1 million NASA American Indian Science Technology Education Consortium grant. Colonnese explained his success this way: No major grant out of OMA is ever a single effort; each grant is the work of a team of individuals. Other individuals who played important roles in gaining the GEAR UP and McNair grants are
Bill Baker, Nancy Westmore, Cathy
Thomas, Tamara Holman, Gabe
Gallardo, Barb Peterson, Mike
Welton, Jennifer Dobbins and Jeanette
James. Other individuals who played important roles in the American Indian Science and Technology Education Consortium grant
are Joe C de Baca, Francine
Campone, Alison Wheatley, Tim
Olson, Scott Pinkham, Sylvia
Martinez and Julia Rogers. I also wish to thank the scores of faculty members who routinely help with our
grants, and to thank some of the UW staff who must tire of seeing me come through their door with yet another proposal that requires their input:
