Editor’s note: The following is a letter to members of the UW faculty from President Richard L. McCormick. The Brotman Award nomination processes are detailed at http://depts.washington.edu/uwpubs/uweekproduction/article6.html.
Dear Colleagues:
I am pleased to invite nominations for the 2000 Brotman Awards for Instructional Excellence. The awards are supported from a generous gift to the University in 1996 from Jeffrey and Susan Brotman to enhance undergraduate teaching and learning. The University of Washington Teaching Academy has the responsibility for reviewing all applications for the awards and advising me on which programs should receive the awards each year.
The Brotman Awards will be given to programs, departments, or groups of people within or across academic units who have achieved excellence in teaching and fostered excellent learning. The Awards recognize that the students who complete such a program have received an outstanding educational experience.
The enclosed description explains the Brotman Awards and the nomination process. Nominations should be submitted to the Brotman Awards Selection Committee at Box 351209 by January 21, 2000. Recipients of the awards will be announced at the University’s annual recognition ceremony on June 8, 2000.
The Brotman Awards represent an important step in recognizing the collective contributions that departments and programs make to the University’s teaching and learning missions. I urge you to consider nominating for the Brotman Awards those departments or programs that have made significant contributions to undergraduate education at UW.
Sincerely Yours,
Richard L. McCormick
President
