Brotman Awards for Instructional Excellence Nomination Procedures

President Richard L. McCormick established the Brotman Awards for Instructional Excellence in 1998 to recognize the accomplishments of programs and departments in advancing excellence in teaching and learning among undergraduates. Thanks to a generous gift to the University in 1996 from Jeffrey and Susan Brotman, the Brotman Awards for Instructional Excellence will be given to academic units or groups of people who have achieved excellence in teaching and fostered excellent learning throughout a program of study. The awards recognize that students who complete such a program benefit significantly from outstanding educational experiences.

Who is eligible: Programs, departments, or groups of faculty and/or staff within the University of Washington are eligible to receive a Brotman Award.

Award: Each year a total of $35,000 will be available for Brotman Awards. Individual Brotman Awards will range from $10,000 to $35,000, depending on the number of awards given in a year. Units receiving Brotman Awards may use the award money in any way that improves undergraduate education at the University and that is consistent with the general spirit and intent of the award.

Nomination procedure: The deadline for nominations for the Brotman Awards is 5 p.m., January 21. All members of the University community (and alumni) may submit nominations for the Brotman Awards. Persons submitting nominating letters should briefly describe (in no more than 1-2 typed pages) the program or group being nominated, the nature of its accomplishments and give indicators of excellence and achievement. Letters of nomination must include your name and your current mailing address. Please submit your letter of nomination to the Brotman Awards Selection Committee, B-40 Gerberding Hall, Box 351209.

Selection procedure: A subcommittee of Teaching Academy members appointed by the director will review nominations. A subset of those programs nominated will then be asked, as semifinalists, to submit supporting documentation to the subcommittee along with supporting letters and materials from their respective Deans or Divisional Deans. The subcommittee will select a set of Brotman Award finalists from the semifinalists. The subcommittee may site-visit finalists prior to making final award decisions. The subcommittee will make recommendations to the president, who will make the final Brotman Award selections. ¶
