Scott, Susan and their daughter Jacqueline Garrell visit Mercer Hall, named after Susan Garrell’s great grandfather Asa Mercer.

MERCER ME: Tour guide Patti Taylor, an undergraduate student, boned up on her history when she gave a tour of the campus to Susan and Scott Garrell and their daughter Jacqueline. That’s because Susan Garrell is the great granddaughter of Asa Mercer, a prominent Seattle name. But it turned out that Taylor needn’t have gone to so much trouble, because Garrell had been regaled with many tales of Mercer by his granddaughter, her mother. Mercer is best known for recruiting and bringing a boatload of unmarried women to the pioneer men of Seattle, but he was also the acting president of the UW from 1861 to 1863.

KUDOS: Faye Dong, professor of aquatic and fishery sciences, has been elected a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists, a distinction conferred upon outstanding professionals for “unusual and meritorious contributions to the profession.”

CLARIFICATION: A University Week article on July 19 was unclear in regard to the timing for annual pay increases. By now, most classified staff, graduate students and medical residents are aware that their pay increases were in the July 25 check. Faculty and professional staff pay increases won’t appear, however, until Aug. 10, with retroactive pay for the first July pay period to be made on Aug. 25.
