Mission Statement:
Foster an inclusive, sustainable, and multidisciplinary community supporting accessible design and play technology through:
♦ Creating student design teams partnered with community co-designers who have disabilities
♦ Teaching students the philosophy of needs-based design and prototyping to generate functional solutions for individuals with disabilities
What do design teams do?
Design teams collaborate with individuals from the community, oftentimes clinicians, to define accessibility-related challenges. Student teams work together typically for 3 academic quarters to brainstorm a solution and then prototype a design. These solutions could be 3D-printed devices, mobile phone apps, or adapted sports equipment, just to name a few.
Each individual is unique in the challenges they face, so HuskyADAPT aims to develop solutions tailored to specific needs and interests. When commercial solutions aren’t appropriate (or maybe don’t exist), our student teams are up for the challenge to make our community a more accessible place.
Here’s a brief description of each of the projects we’re offering this year:
Switch Accessible Games
How can people with disabilities engage in popular tabletop games using switch access?
Iterate on last year with the existing client.
Bike Steering
How might we adapt commercially available bikes for a child with hemiplegia to steer a bike without external assistance?
Work with a child with hemiplegia who is struggling to steer a bike, adapting commercially available bikes to enable the child to steer with external assistance.
Experimental Education Unit
How do we identify our clients’ needs in an inclusive education environment as they adapt to a temporary school building?
This team will embark on intensive need finding relating to inclusive education at the EEU.
Sports Chair
How might we enable wheelchair basketball athletes who use a day chair to transport their basketball chairs?
A lot of basketball athletes have trouble transporting their basketball chairs while being in their day chair. Create a solution that will allow them to transport their chairs safely without damaging it.
Wireless Switch
How might we design and scale an efficient and affordable wireless specialty switch?
Iterate on last year’s product with the existing client.
