Overview:
Youth in Focus’ mission is to equip youth to share their ideas and values with the world through photography and art. We believe all youth should have equitable access to quality arts education. We provide after-school, summer, and partner programs for teens aged 1319 furthest from education justice, defined as youth of color, youth facing poverty/housing insecurity, those for whom English is not their first language, and LGBTQ+ youth. We focus on Social & Emotional Learning, 21st-century skills, and technical photography and digital media skills to ensure students have the tools and confidence they need to succeed in education, life, and career. We offer free classes and bus passes to make our programs accessible to all.

At Youth in Focus, we value art as a powerful medium of change to create a healthy, vibrant, more equitable, and just society for all. Through this work, we aim to confront and dismantle systemic oppression in all its forms.

Position Summary:
Youth in Focus is looking for a creative social media intern who’s excited and passionate about storytelling through social media as a form of connecting to the local community. You will work with the Community Engagement Manager to develop content and engage our audiences through our blog, Instagram, Facebook, Mailchimp, and (possibly) TikTok. Our social media platforms allow us to share opportunities at Youth in Focus and Seattle’s broader creative art community. You will connect with current students, Youth Advisory Board, Teaching Artists, and staff for social media inspiration. You will be an important part of the team as you connect directly with our audience and community. We encourage you to bring new, creative ideas to the table as we connect to our dierent audiences (ex: parents vs. students vs. partners). Throughout the internship, you will better understand content creation in non-profits, brand awareness, content collaboration, and creating/maintaining social media campaigns. You will have an opportunity to gain insights into professional social media best practices by engaging in informational interviews with members of the creative team at foundry10, a philanthropic education research organization providing support for this internship.

What You’ll be Doing:

  • Photographing and documenting classes, events, and field trips to use for social media content
  • Use branding guidelines to create content on Canva
  • Collaborating with the Community Engagement Manager with pitching, organizing, creating, and posting content on social media, Mailchimp, and blog platforms
  • Assist in community engagement by responding to messages and
    comments received on all platforms
  • Engage with students, YAB, TAs, and staff to create content to promote the organization

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Interest in the field of marketing, communications, and advertising
  • Passion for photography and the creative arts
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Proficient in using platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Linkedin, and Canva
  • Able to collaborate with stakeholders and self-motived to work independently
  • Experience creating content through the lens of equity & inclusion

Social Media Internship beginning/mid October 2024

This hybrid position involves in-person work with staff and youth at the Youth in Focus office and virtual work on a provided cell phone (Wi-Fi connection needed, cellular service not included).

Tentative Schedule:

  • Weekly virtual check-ins with the Community Engagement Manager
  • Twice a month, in-person meetings to review current and upcoming social media communications
  • Weekly Content Creation & Posting
  • Attend programs, end-of-quarter Showcases, yearly Gala, and team meetings (as necessary)
  • Visit offsite programs, events, and exhibitions of student’s work, to document YiF’s impact in the community

TO APPLY
Please submit a resume and answer the following two questions (as a PDF file) to shidab@youthinfocus.org with the email subject “Social Media Internship.” Finalists will be asked for references.

Please answer the following questions as part of your application:

1) Which of our values resonates with you, and how would you work to uphold this value on our social media platforms?
2) How will your professional and/or lived experience contribute to Youth in Focus’s commitment to creating an online educational, positive, and community-reflective platform?

The application deadline is October 1st, 2024, or until the position is filled. We will contact you if you are invited to an initial conversation; we cannot commit to responding to inquiries regarding the status of your application.

Because this position works directly with youth, candidates must successfully pass a criminal history background check (free of convictions of crimes against children and vulnerable adults. Other convictions may not preclude you from this internship.)
