About Us
House of Tectonics is a literary magazine based out of Seattle, WA, and we’re currently hiring our initial team for launch. We publish in several genres of fiction as well as memoir-style blogs, and poetry. We are a small but bizzaro team of creatives and professionals all working together to create something beautiful and off-beat. Our art style is mixed media so our writing is authentic, avant-garde, and weird.
All roles are full-time and hybrid in Seattle (you can come in whenever you want, we love it when people are in the office, bouncing ideas and churning out great things).
About You
You must be excited by the dark, the heart-wrenching, the slimy. At House of Tectonics our art style requires heavy use of illustration (either physical or digital, it’s up to you!) We publish in some gritty subjects, from drugs to grief to illnesses to the supernatural to hauntings to addictions to abuse. There are no right or wrong stories, just great ideas and great execution. As the Staff Graphic Designer you’re in charge of making sure the magazine looks and feels its most awesome self.
- You must submit an art/design portfolio to be considered for this position.
- A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, art, painting, media, marketing, or any related field is required.
- Your main responsibility will be drawing illustrations that will go into the magazine that corresponds with the writing (you can use any physical or digital drawing tools you’re comfortable with: Procreate, Photoshop, Rebelle, ArtRage Vitae, etc.)
- Illustrations will be mixed media, using oil pastel and ink and brush marker
- You will also design the typographic layout of the magazine, both physical and online (InDesign and Figma are preferred here)
- You will take photographs, develop photoshoots, and edit materials in post-production
- There will be some web design (SquareSpace)
- Nice to have: fluency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Contribute creative and aesthetic ideas to the magazine (your input is important!)
This is a full-time position that requires lots of creative input and heavy amounts of drawing with either physical tools or a stylus and tablet. Your training can be any artistic field. We’re looking for someone weird and cool who can refine the brand voice and produce assets capably.
Please email general@thetectonics.org if you have any questions, or want to add anything to your application. We try to review all applications within two weeks.
