Nature of Organization
Sociology is an academic department in the College of Arts and Sciences. We’re housed in Savery Hall, where we have administrative and advising offices. Normal office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Work study schedules are based on students’ class schedules and academic responsibilities, as well as department availability.
Duties & Responsibilities
Student assistants work at our offices’ main desks to support the department chair, administrator, advisors, and faculty as needed. This includes:
-Front desk support in the main office and advising office, including welcoming visitors and (occasionally) answering phones
-Administrative support, including room reservations, equipment rentals, and lending keys
-Design projects: departmental posters, promotional materials, and communications (this will be a particular focus for the 2025-2026 academic year)
-Special projects based on your interests and skills: updating files, conducting research, etc.
-Distributing mail to faculty, staff, and graduate student mailboxes -Printing, photocopying, and scanning course documents and confidential files
-Word processing and data entry
-Tracking calendars and monitoring email to respond to faculty and staff requests
-Tidying work areas as needed
-Various departmental errands
-Monitoring and restocking supplies inventory
-Occasionally assisting with surplus equipment removal and internal moves
-Occasionally assisting with special events in the department (graduation, receptions, etc.)
-Communicating with supervisor regarding changes in schedule or availability
Minimum Qualifications
-MUST HAVE WORK STUDY AWARD
-Graphic design skills
-Dependability
-Customer service skills including welcoming visitors, answering phones, and directing requests
-Discretion with confidential information
-Attention to detail
-Ability to work independently and take initiative
-Basic Microsoft Office (or similar) software skills
