2020-2021 BLAKEMORE INTERNSHIP AT SEATTLE ART MUSEUM<\/h4>\n

The Seattle Art Museum is committed to offering meaningful Asian art internships to talented University of Washington graduate or advanced undergraduate students with the goal of furthering scholarship and advancing the study of Asian art and culture. The Blakemore Foundation has validated the museum\u2019s vision by generously sponsoring the Blakemore Internship Program, which enables promising young scholars to gain experience working directly with SAM\u2019s renowned Asian art collection and participate in major exhibition and publication projects.<\/p>\n

One of the most prized aspects of the Blakemore Internships is the opportunity for the interns to be mentored by one of SAM\u2019s Asian art curators, and gain practical experience in an area directly related to their studies while working with SAM\u2019s renowned Asian art collection. The interns gain intimate knowledge of the day to day responsibilities of a curator, hone their research skills, and enhance their knowledge of Asian art. In addition, interns will have the opportunity to network internationally with top scholars in their field, plan and implement scholarly programs such as international symposia, and participate in public speaking opportunities by giving gallery talks and docent training presentations.<\/p>\n

The unwavering goal of the program is to provide promising students of Asian art and Asian studies with outstanding opportunities to intern at a top ranked Asian art museum. The internship program furthers the Blakemore Foundation\u2019s mission of advancing the study of Asian art and culture by fostering new scholarship in the field of Asian art. The interns gain hands-on experience in a museum environment while the museum benefits from the specialized knowledge of Asian art, language and culture that the interns bring to the departments they support.<\/p>\n

The internship period is for fall, winter and\/or spring quarters of the 2020-2021 academic year. The interns will receive a quarterly stipend. The expectation is that interns will work 20 hours per week. Interns must be enrolled Graduate Students or Junior or Senior Undergraduates in the University of Washington\u2019s Art History or the Henry M. Jackson School\u2018s Asian Studies department during the quarter or quarters they are interning. Applicants majoring in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean studies, including but not limited to the Department of Asian Languages and Literature, will also be considered.<\/p>\n

Blakemore Intern for Japanese and Korean Art<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Blakemore Intern for Japanese and Korean Art will work closely with Xiaojin Wu, SAM\u2019s curator of Japanese and Korean Art. The intern will assist the curator with a range of curatorial tasks, including conducting research on SAM\u2019s Japanese and Korean collections, updating the TMS (The Museum System) database records and website contents, and writing interpretive materials for exhibitions and installations. The 2020-21 intern will also assist with research for the upcoming special exhibitions of Korean and Japanese art. Students who are fluent in the Korean language and interested in museum work are particularly encouraged to apply.<\/p>\n

The intern will also have exciting opportunities to work with the Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas (CAAI) at the Asian Art Museum, working with key international institutions with Asian expertise as well as local specialists partnering with the CAAI to present an ambitious and exciting lineup of programs. While assisting on these projects, the intern will work directly with the curator, and also with curatorial coordinators, educators, registrars, IT staff, and conservators inside SAM, and scholars of Japanese and Korean culture outside SAM.<\/p>\n

Blakemore Intern for Chinese Art<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Blakemore Intern for Chinese Art will work under the supervision of Foong Ping, SAM\u2019s Curator of Chinese Art. The Blakemore intern will assist the curator with a range of curatorial tasks, including conducting research on SAM\u2019s Chinese collections and new acquisitions, updating the TMS (The Museum System) database records, and writing interpretive materials for exhibitions and installations. The intern will also have exciting opportunities to work with the Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas (CAAI) at the Asian Art Museum, working with key international institutions with Asian expertise as well as local specialists partnering with the CAAI to present an ambitious and exciting lineup of programs.
