One City<\/a> Accepting Applications for Bilingual Education Internship for Undergraduates

\nWe are currently accepting applications for Somali and Vietnamese speakers.\u00a0Explore teaching by supporting local bilingual programs through our paid internship program.<\/h5>\n

Our bilingual education intern program aims to provide an important opportunity for bilingual and bicultural undergraduates to explore careers in teaching. This program will allow undergraduate students to explore teaching by placing them in a school setting where their linguistic and cultural skills are highly impactful, including working with students who share the intern\u2019s language and their cultural background.<\/p>\n

Time Period: The internship will start in Winter Quarter \u201921 and end in Spring Quarter \u201921, though some internships may be able to start during Autumn Quarter \u201920. Interns will be expected to work 5-10 hours per week for the duration of the internship until they\u2019ve reached their 105 hour requirement. Exact schedules for the interns will be arranged with Highline Public Schools or Seattle Public Schools to accommodate college class schedules, travel time, and the needs of the school.<\/p>\n

As part of the program, interns may do one or more of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assist a lead teacher in a bilingual program
\nLead bilingual activities with students in their home language
\nParticipate in after-school cultural and enrichment activities
\nTutor K-12 students in their home language (Somali or Vietnamese)
\nLearn how to develop lessons and materials, and see your work used in real classrooms
\nInterns will complete 105 hours of documented service to the assigned School. After completion of the internship hours the intern will receive an $1,800 stipend.<\/p>\n

Students who complete our internship will also be eligible to be reimbursed for future expenses related to their career development as future teachers, including application fees for Masters in Teaching programs and required competency tests.<\/p>\n

Interns will also be eligible for graduate school scholarships from One City upon completion of the program.<\/p>\n

Interns will be asked to participate in our One City Network professional learning community. There the interns will build their network and relationships with teachers and other practitioners to help them build their resume and develop important professional skills.<\/p>\n

Applicants must meet certain requirements to be considered for an internship:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Language: Applicants must speak either Somali or Vietnamese at an intermediate level or higher. As a rough guideline, intermediate is the equivalent of 2nd year college language courses. (Note: An intermediate speaker is one that may have strong speaking and listening skills especially when talking with family, but may not have strong reading and writing skills. That\u2019s okay!).<\/p>\n

Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university in Washington state.<\/p>\n

Travel: Applicants must be willing and able to travel to the school site in Highline Public Schools or Seattle Schools every week to meet their hour requirements.<\/p>\n

Employment: Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States.<\/p>\n
