The Black Embodiments Studio<\/a> (BES) seeks a Public Programming Intern for a yearlong, research-based position that requires strategic, creative thinking with administrative prowess.<\/p>\nBES is an arts writing incubator and public lecture series dedicated to creating and fostering discourse around contemporary black art and artists. The Public Programming Intern will be integral to continuing BES\u2019 streamlined back-end work while enhancing BES\u2019 front-facing profile across the University of Washington, Seattle, regionally, and nationally.<\/p>\n
The Intern should have an interest in contemporary art, an extreme attention to detail, experience in project management, and a facility with having conversations about racial blackness and interfacing with diverse communities. Familiarity with, interest in, and ease with print and\/or web design is a major plus.<\/p>\n
The position is 40 hours per quarter for three consecutive quarters, and pays $3,000 total. The intern will work with the Director of The Black Embodiments Studio, Kemi Adeyemi, and will regularly interface with the Director of the Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Emily Zimmerman. Additional hours with and duties completed for the Gallery itself are also available.<\/p>\n
Duties should BES be all-online:<\/strong><\/p>\nJacob Lawrence Gallery Library Initiative<\/strong>
\nThe small Library is working in conjunction with BES to increase its holdings of arts publications concerning Black artists. The Public Programming Intern will spearhead this effort with the full support of BES and the Gallery, having a significant amount of intellectual and creative control.<\/p>\nInventory current holdings and propose an acquisitions program that will reflect artists working across time periods and mediums
\nGenerate bibliography of significant books regarding Black artists and exhibitions since the 1960s
\nDevelop and continually update list of contemporary arts publications by and about Black artists to be considered for acquisition, ranging from major museum exhibition catalogs and small-run and regional imprints
\nPropose and potentially implement (digital and\/or IRL) programming to increase awareness of and interaction with the Library<\/p>\n
Communications<\/strong>
\nThe Public Programming Intern will be integral to creating more awareness around BES, devising outreach around our limited programming (3 events per year) without capitulating to a compulsory social media presence.<\/p>\nDevise and implement plan for creating connections between BES and initiatives, departments, and individuals across the UW campuses and in greater Seattle
\nDevise and distribute digital announcements of 1 public lecture per quarter
\nMaintain regularly updated calendar of black artists on view in Seattle
\nDevelop and manage (limited) social media presence
\nDraft quarterly listserv announcement of upcoming programming and related black art ephemera<\/p>\n
Publications<\/strong>
\nEach year BES prints a small journal, A Year in Black Art, compiling the residents\u2019 writings on the black artists exhibited throughout the city.<\/p>\nComplete design and layout of the BES journal, whether working off of current template or designing anew<\/p>\n
Additional duties should BES convene in-person:<\/strong><\/p>\nCoordinate travel and lodging for one visiting artist per quarter
