Wa Na Wari is offering three 1-month long residencies in the Wa Na Wari house where a visual artist can work and create new visual artwork. The new work will then be on view at Wa Na Wari for a 2-month period after the residency. Artists in residence will have as their studio a room that is up two flights of stairs and on the same floor as the bathroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Wa Na Wari is located in Seattle&#8217;s Central District, a historically redlined neighborhood that was the cultural and artistic hub for the Black community for many decades. The Wa Na Wari house is the second home purchased by Frank and Goldyne Green, and has been in the Green family for five generations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Artists will be able to work and create in a home that has been a central part of Black community life in Seattle for over 50 years and is currently an incubator for Black thought and creativity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">About Wa Na Wari:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The mission of Wa Na Wari is to create space for Black ownership, possibility, and belonging through art, historic preservation, and connection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sited in a 5th-generation Black-owned home, Wa Na Wari:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Hosts rotating exhibits by local and regional Black artists<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Provides a space for workshops, performances, and lectures<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Convenes changemakers, elders, youth, neighbors, and artists for collaboration, innovation, and community organizing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: medium;\">Operates an oral history studio for gathering and sharing the stories of Seattle\u2019s historically Black Central District<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">ELIGIBILITY<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The call is open to artists over 18 years of age that identify as descendants of the African diaspora living in King County, Washington.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">BUDGET<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Each selected artist will receive a stipend of $2,000.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">RESIDENCY DATES<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">March 2021 with exhibition from April 9-May 21<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">June 2021 with exhibition from July 9- August 27<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">September 2021 with exhibition from October 8-November 26th<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">APPLICATION DEADLINE AND TIMELINE<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The application deadline is 11:59p.m., Monday, January 11, 2021.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eunicewaymonartsservices.submittable.com\/submit\/181070\/wa-na-wari-artist-residency\/eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Link to the online application<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Monday, January 11, 2021, 11:59pm PST \u2013 Application Deadline<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Monday, January 25th, 2021 \u2013 Selected artists notified\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">March 2021- First residency begins<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Applications must include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Letter of Interest\u00a0(not to exceed 2,000 characters). Please provide a statement describing your interest in this particular residency and why working in the Wa Na Wari house would be beneficial for your career and artistic practice at this time.
