Ceramics Studio Assistant | Artist Studio \u2013 Bellingham, WA<\/p>\n
An established sculptor is seeking a creative, driven, and experienced Ceramic Studio Assistant to participate and oversee the production, maintenance and inventory of a ceramics studio within a professional studio art practice. The Studio Assistant will work closely with the Artist and Studio Manager in the upkeep and operations of the clay studio while contributing to the production and oversight of all ceramic sculptures. This role offers a distinct opportunity to take part in casting vision and establishing a ceramics studio in a newly constructed studio space. The Studio Assistant will be expected to maintain the kilns, studio and all related operations while following workplace and material conscious safety guidelines and procedures.<\/p>\n
Responsibilities:
\n\u25cf Assists with the production of ceramic works as well as oversee the maintenance and inventory of the ceramics studio.
\n\u25cf Manages and maintains all ceramic materials (clay and glazes) and related equipment.
\n\u25cf Contributes to the production and oversight of large-scale ceramic sculptures.
\n\u25cf Operates electric kilns (Skutt) including structural and electrical maintenance and care, including replacing coils, deconstructing and reconstructing the kiln, along with setting computer elements.
\n\u25cf Operates and maintains clay recycling processes, including using a Peter Pugger pug mill and plaster wedging tables.
\n\u25cf Develops artworks, projects, and processes from verbal descriptions along with schematics and sketches to troubleshoot the feasibility in clay fabrication and\/or related materials.<\/p>\n
Qualifications:
\nRequired
\n\u25cf Minimum 5 years experience in a ceramic studio\/s (or related experience and\/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience).
\n\u25cf Broad knowledge of clay processes and working stages.
\n\u25cf Broad knowledge of glaze chemistry and mixing with an interest in experimentation.
\n\u25cf Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to multitask, prioritize, and independently manage varied projects while maintaining a clean, organized ceramics studio.
\n\u25cf Self-motivated, reliable, trustworthy and attentive to task completion and enjoys working in a creative environment while learning and developing new processes.
\n\u25cf Effective communicator and willing to work collaboratively with a small team.
\n\u25cf Proficiency in basic computer software and programs.
\n\u25cf Follows all necessary safety measures and guidelines in all working processes with emphasis on the handling of hazardous materials in a ceramics studio.
\n\u25cf Proficient in exercising discretion and confidentiality.<\/p>\n
Preferred
\n\u25cf Basic shop skills.
\n\u25cf Management of large-scale ceramic works.
\n\u25cf Pattern\/mold making experience (plaster and silicone).
\n\u25cf Art handling, storing, shipping, and installing artwork.
\n\u25cf Knowledge of Blaauw Kilns.
\n\u25cf Experience in using and making kiln furniture.<\/p>\n
Physical Requirements:
\n\u25cf Must be able to traverse all areas of the studio including walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
\n\u25cf Ability to carry & move heavy objects.
\n\u25cf Ability to safely operate mobile elevated work platforms, shop production equipment, power and hand tools.
\n\u25cf Ability to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor space with staff following guidelines in accordance with the health department and local ordinances.<\/p>\n
Compensation & Benefits:
\nStarting at 30\/hrs up to possibly 40\/hrs per week, Monday-Thursday
\nStarting pay is $20-$25 an hour depending on skills assessed during a training period at the studio.
\n60-day trial period, after which there are additional benefits.<\/p>\n
