{"id":7157,"date":"2024-10-15T08:53:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T15:53:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/advis104\/?p=7157"},"modified":"2024-10-15T10:27:41","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T17:27:41","slug":"sculptor-seeking-woods-metals-studio-assistant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/advis104\/2024\/10\/15\/sculptor-seeking-woods-metals-studio-assistant\/","title":{"rendered":"Sculptor seeking Woods\/Metals Studio Assistant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-wp-editing=\"1\">An established sculptor is seeking a creative, driven, and experienced Wood\/Metals Studio Assistant to oversee<br \/>\nthe production, maintenance and inventory of the wood\/metals shops within a professional studio art practice.<\/p>\n<p>The Studio Assistant will work closely with the Artist and Studio Manager in upkeep and operations of the wood\/metals shops including all wood fabrication, welding, mount making, developing forms in wood and metal for varying sculptural projects, apparatus fabrication for sculptural production, and general construction needs<br \/>\nfor the artist\u2019s studio. This role offers a distinct opportunity to lead the wood and metals shops in a newly constructed studio space. The Studio Assistant will be expected to maintain each of the shops and all related operations while following workplace and material conscious safety guidelines and procedures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Responsibilities:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Operates and maintains a wood and metals shop within a professional sculptor\u2019s studio practice.<br \/>\n&#8211; Upkeeps and maintains wood\/metal workshop operations: machinery oversight and service, maintenance, material stocking, etc.<br \/>\n&#8211; Operates and maintains all metal related equipment.<br \/>\n&#8211; Operates and maintains all wood shop equipment and power tools.<br \/>\n&#8211; Maintains a clean and organized wood\/metal shop.<br \/>\n&#8211; Oversees all wood shop fabrication including processing slabs, construction, traditional joinery, casework, sanding, finishing etc.<br \/>\n&#8211; Develops forms in wood and metal for varying sculptural projects.<br \/>\n&#8211; Oversees apparatus fabrication for various sculptural production projects<br \/>\n&#8211; Welds, bends, and forms metals per project requirements.<br \/>\n&#8211; Conducts varying surface finishing processes with metals and wood on sculptural projects.<br \/>\n&#8211; Maintains general construction needs of the artist\u2019s studio.<br \/>\n&#8211; Develops artwork, projects, and processes from verbal descriptions along with schematics, sketches and\/or models to troubleshoot the structural feasibility of wood and\/or metal fabrication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qualifications<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Required<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; Minimum of 5 years fabrication shop experience<br \/>\n&#8211; Experience operating and maintaining metals and welding\u00a0 equipment (Tig\/ Acetylene).<br \/>\n&#8211; Experience operating and maintaining wood shop equipment and power tools.<br \/>\n&#8211; Experience operating and maintaining air compressors and related tools.<br \/>\n&#8211; Understanding of the environmentally safe procedure of disposing of potentially toxic materials<br \/>\n&#8211; Broader construction knowledge\/experience<br \/>\n&#8211; Candidate is self-motivated, reliable, trustworthy and attentive to timely task completion and enjoys<br \/>\nworking in a creative environment while learning and developing new processes.<br \/>\n&#8211; Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to multitask, prioritize, and independently manage varied assignments.<br \/>\n&#8211; Basic computer proficiency.<br \/>\n&#8211; Follows all necessary safety measures and guidelines in all working processes.<br \/>\n&#8211; Proficient in exercising discretion and confidentiality.<\/p>\n<p><em>Preferred<\/em><br \/>\n&#8211; Mount making experience<br \/>\n&#8211; Knowledge of wood properties &amp; milling processes: air drying\/green wood\/kiln drying<br \/>\n&#8211; Pattern\/mold making experience (plaster and silicone)<br \/>\n&#8211; Metal casting processes and experience<br \/>\n&#8211; Art handling, storing, shipping, and installing artwork<br \/>\n&#8211; Plating, polishing, patinas and metalsmithing skills<br \/>\n&#8211; Knowledge of environmentally sound materials and processes in a wood\/metal shop<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical Requirements:<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Must be able to traverse all areas of the studio including walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.<br \/>\n&#8211; Ability to carry &amp; move heavy objects up to 50 pounds.<br \/>\n&#8211; Ability to safely operate mobile elevated work platforms (Skyjack), shop production equipment, power and hand tools.<br \/>\n&#8211; Ability to work on-site, in shared indoor and outdoor space with staff following guidelines in accordance with the health department and local ordinances.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compensation &amp; Benefits:<\/strong><br \/>\nStarting at 32\/hrs up to possibly 40\/hrs per week, Monday-Thursday.<br \/>\nStarting pay is $22-$28 an hour depending on skills assessed during a training period at the studio.<br \/>\n60-day trial period, after which there are additional benefits.<br \/>\nPaid professional development\/educational opportunities.
