Making the  appointment
uTry to give the specific reason so that the office staff can allocate enough time. uRequest additional time for communication challenges, complicated problems, numerous concerns etc.
For example, an annual physical or screening, a follow-up visit to go over test results, a medication adjustment, care of an injury, infections of illness, advice on coping with an existing condition or a request for a referral .  Try to be as specific as possible as this helps the office staff allocate enough time based on urgency. Most medical providers must now limit each case to 10 to 15 minutes--and this includes reviewing a chart, seeing a patient, then documenting what was done, and ordering and reviewing lab test.  If the patient has special needs that often require additional time, has a complicated problem or several smaller problems, be sure to mention this when making the appointment so that an extended time slot can be reserved.
Mention any accommodation that might be needed to enhance communication and offer to bring picture books and other communication aides.
