The children in foster care are at extremely high risk for
drug and alcohol abuse. Many factors contribute to this,
including:![[Cartoon: Gabriel giving another kid a cigarette, thinking "This is an easy way to make friends at a new school."]](/allcwe2/fosterparents/training/images/dd2b.gif)
- Children whose biological parents abuse drugs and
alcohol seem to have a biological and psychological
tendency to become abusers themselves.
- Early role models for these children may have
demonstrated drug and alcohol "self
medication" as a method to deal with problems.
- Recreational drug use may have been a way of fitting
in and belonging to a group.
Because substance abuse is so common with foster children,
you need to make vigorous active efforts to avoid this
devastating problem. A first step is learning more about drug
