Professor Bretherton completed undergraduate work at the California Institute of Technology in 1980. He received his doctorate in 1984 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His teaching interests include ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, fluid dynamics, cloud physics, and mesoscale meteorology. Professor Bretherton has a variety of research interests, including numerical fluid dynamics applied to atmospheric convection and cloud-topped boundary layers, applications of fractals to fluid dynamics, and linear and nonlinear wave propagation in geophysical contexts.
Professor Bretherton holds a number of honors including being a Presidential Young Investigator, 1988-1994; membership of the American Meteorological Society's Committee on Mesoscale Processes; and of FIRE, the First ISCCP Regional Experiment Science Team. He is also an Associate Editor of the Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences and of the Monthly Weather Review. Professor Bretherton receives support for his research from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research.
