NEW AMTAS ACADEMIC MEMBERS

We are pleased to announce that Florida International University and the University of Utah have joined the list of AMTAS academic members. Their respective research projects are “Identification and Validation of Analytical Chemistry Methods for Detecting Composite Surface Contamination and Moisture” and “Development and Evaluation of Fracture Mechanics Test Methods for Sandwich Composites.” Go to http://depts.washington.edu/amtas/research/index.html for more details on AMTAS research projects.

COMPOSITES SHORT COURSE

The third AMTAS Institute on Advanced Aircraft Composites was offered September 17-21, 2007 at the University of Washington, attracting 14 participants, 12 being from outside the U.S. The course is designed to address critical areas of composite technologies, control, testing, analysis, design, inspection, repair, and product lifecycle management. The next offering will be March 24-28, 2008.

UPCOMING MEETINGS

  1. The AMTAS spring meeting will take place in April 2008. Further information will be forthcoming.
  1. The FAA Joint Advanced Materials and Structures (JAMS) Annual Technical Review Meeting is being held June 17-19, 2008 at the Future of Flight Aviation Center in Everett, WA. More details will be available in the spring.

PAST MEETINGS

  1. Our autumn 2007 semiannual AMTAS meeting was held on October 25, 2007 at the University of Washington.   1. The 22nd American Society for Composites (ASC) Technical Conference took place September 17-20, 2007 in Seattle at the University of Washington, attracting 350 participants. The conference theme was “Composites: Enabling a New Era in Civil Aviation.” Dr. Patrick Stickler of The Boeing Co. and UW Prof. Paolo Feraboli were the conference chairs.

PRESENTATIONS/PR

  1. On November 13, 2007, Mark Tuttle and Al Miller of The Boeing Company will be the featured speakers at the UW College of Engineering’s 2007 Engineering Lecture Series. Their presentation is called “Building the Future of Commercial Aviation: Boeing's 787 Dreamliner.” Although the event is free, tickets are required.   1. The September 2007 issue cover story of University of Washington’s alumni magazine, Columns, focused on composites and Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. Citing the long-standing relationship between the UW and Boeing, the article prominently features AMTAS director Mark Tuttle and Boeing’s Al Miller, a UW alum.
