A Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine at the University of Washington!

The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Washington has a long and impressive history and I am privileged to serve as interim chair as Dr. Michael Crowder has stepped down effective November 1st 2020. This marks my second time at the helm of the Department (previously 10/2012-03/2014) and I am prepared and enthusiastic to lead the Department. We are an integral part of the University of Washington School of Medicine and provide excellent clinical care for patients across its affiliated institutions - University of Washington Medical Center (Montlake and Northwest Campus), Harborview Medical Center, Seattle Children's Hospital, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System.

Our faculty serve in numerous clinical and administrative leadership roles across the entire spectrum of perioperative care and pain management. Our core mission is to provide the best possible care for our patients, to train the next generation of physician leaders in anesthesiology and pain medicine, and to perform innovative and translational research that advances patient care and overall medical knowledge.

My focus as interim chair will be to preserve and expand the momentum of this successful clinical, research and educational mission, and to maintain stability during a time of several other transitions and challenges. These include but are not limited to our ongoing role in the pandemic response, our pursuit of a deeper understanding of racial justice and a continued emphasis on diversity and inclusion, and the ongoing Destination One (D1) transition to one electronic health record. I am enormously grateful for the exceptional talent in our faculty, trainees, researchers, nurses and staff that will enable the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine to retain and increase its prominent national and international reputation.

I encourage you to take a moment to explore our departmental website and to consider the many exciting research opportunities and educational programs that we offer. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our distinguished faculty to learn more about our Department and what we stand for.
