Abstract Guidelines

BACKGROUND: Please briefly introduce the project, clearly articulate the problem addressed and/or the hypothesis tested.

METHODS: Summarize the methods used to conduct the study.

RESULTS: Present the major results in a clear and concise manner.  No tables or figures. The abstract size is limited to 3400 characters, ~one page in length.

DISCUSSION: Discuss the findings within the larger context of the research or academic field.  Include statements as to future directions for this project.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: Please do not include acknowledgments in your abstract. You may acknowledge collaborators, mentors, and sources of funding on your poster.

A case report will use the following headings:

INTRODUCTION:  Briefly describe the context of the case and explain its relevance and importance.  May begin directly with the description of the case.

CASE DESCRIPTION:  Follow basic rules of medical communication; describe in sequence the history, physical examination, investigative studies, and the patient’s progress and outcome.

DISCUSSION:  Review why decisions were made and extract the lesson from the case (teaching points).  Reports from the literature, or their absence, are cited that either directly support or contradict the findings.

Formatting for final document:

  • Abstracts will be limited to 3400 characters, no tables or figures, ~one (1) page in length
  • Include the headings as on this example

Abstracts not conforming to these criteria will not be evaluated.
