Focus Areas


Faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine engage in multidisciplinary research, with major emphasis in neuroscience and pain, genomics and mitochondria biology, outcomes, and medical training and patient education. Research in the Department is conducted in facilities located in the University of Washington Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center, South Lake Union Campus, Seattle Children's Hospital and Research Institute, and the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System. In addition, the Institute for Simulation & Interprofessional Studies provides unique research opportunities in health care education, patient safety, and outcomes. Faculty and the research they conduct are recognized nationally and internationally. Research expenditures across all sites for the current fiscal year amount to $10,636,000 total costs. These research funds are obtained from the National Institutes of Health, non-profit organizations and foundations, and industry. This year, NIH research funding amounts to $8,110,000.
