Outcomes

Introduction

Research in outcomes is a broad field that includes clinical studies, large database analysis, and patient registries. Outcomes research investigates the relationship between treatments and their end results, going beyond simple physical outcomes such as morbidity and mortality to include patient outcomes that matter most to them such as function and satisfaction, as well as costs of care and efficiency of the healthcare system. Clinical factors that may affect outcomes include not only patient factors and the specific treatments provided, but the process of care (including resource use and human error). Outcomes research in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is open to any relevant topics, including but not limited to pain, trauma, medical liability, quality of care, anesthesia awareness, postoperative vision loss, and clinical decision support tools.
