Exercise in kids

Here are some kinds of studies that have been done to try to answer this question: [this page is still incomplete so the links are not in yet to describe these in more detail]

  • Divide ordinary people into two groups by chance (coin toss). Then one group would do exercises for several years, and the other group would just do their regular activities. The bone density would be measured before and after the study to see if exercise made a difference.
  • Measure the bone density in people who play tennis, and compare the arm that hold the racket with the other arm.
  • Study people who don't get any exercise to see if they have low bone density
  • Study animal bones to see if weight or exercise increases the bone strength
  • Study kids to see if age makes a difference.
