  • Dr. Junfa Zhu on Highly Cited Researchers 2020 List
    Former postdoc Dr. Junfa Zhu (now a professor at USTC in China) who was also more recently here on sabbatical was named on the Highly Cited Researchers 2020 list from Clarivate. This anticipated annual list identifies researchers who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Congratulations, Junfa!!
  • Líney Árnadóttir Wins Graduate Mentoring Award!
    Professor Líney Árnadóttir, who was in our group last year during her sabbatical, has won the 2020 Graduate Mentoring Award for the College of Engineering at Oregon State University. Read more about her award and contributions to the OSU community Congratulations, Liney!!
  • Campbell wins ACS Catalysis Award for Exceptional Achievements in Catalysis
    Charlie has won the American Chemical Society Catalysis Division’s Award for Exceptional Achievements in Catalysis for 2020. This award “recognizes excellence and scientific leadership in catalysis science and technology by an individual” and “the impact of a researcher’s work in the broad field of catalysis science and technology, including advances in creation, understanding, and application of heterogeneous, homogeneous, and/or enzymatic catalytic systems.” More info at: https://www.acs-catalysis.org/copy-of-awards-1
  • Zhongtian Mao Wins 2 Awards at National AVS Symposium
    Graduate student Zhongtian Mao won TWO prestigious graduate student awards at the 66th International AVS Symposium in Columbus, Ohio this year! The Morton M. Traum Award of the AVS Surface Science Division The Fundamental Discoveries in Heterogeneous Catalysis Graduate Student Presentation Award Congratulations to Zhongtian for his well-deserved awards!! They are based on his discovery of a fundamental equation that equates the apparent activation energy in reaction mechanisms to a weighted average of the enthalpies of the rate-controlling transition states and intermediates, where the weighting factor is the degree of rate control for each species.
  • Jose A. Rodriguez named DOE Office of Science Distinguished Scientist Fellow
    Jose A. Rodriguez, the first student to get his PhD in Campbell’s research group, was announced as a winner of the DOE Office of Science Distinguished Scientist Fellowship. The 5 winners (one for each office in the Office of Science) were announced at a ceremony at DOE Headquarters on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019.   • Reena Al-Mualem Accepts Graduate Fellowship at UT Austin
    Undergraduate researcher Ziareena (Reena) Al-Mualem has decided to pursue her PhD studies at the University of Texas at Austin, supported by their Provost’s Graduate Excellence Fellowship.  Congratulations Reena!! She will move to Austin this summer and start graduate studies in the fall. Good luck on your next journey!
  • Reena Al-Mulaem wins Undergraduate Research Award!
    Congratulations to our recently-graduated student Ziareena (Reena) Al-Mualem, who earned her B.S. in Chemistry and is one of this year’s recipients of the Distinguished Research in Chemistry Award. Congratulations also to Zhongtian Mao and Jack Rumptz who mentored her research on metal atom adsorption calorimetry.
  • Reena Al-Mualem Selected for ACS Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry
    Congratulations to undergraduate researcher Ziareena Al-Mualem! She has just been chosen to receive an ACS Undergraduate Award in Physical Chemistry. Bravo!! Thanks (and congratulations also) to her graduate student mentors Zhongtian Mao and Jack Rumptz who advised her research on metal adsorption calorimetry.
  • Drs. Carey and Zhao’s manuscript featured on cover of Surface Science

    Congratulations to Dr. Carey and Dr. Zhao whose graphical abstract for the manuscript “Energetics of Adsorbed Benzene on Ni(111) and Pt(111) by Calorimetry” was featured on the cover page for Volume 676 of Surface Science.
  • Spencer passes his PhD exam!
    Congratulations to Spencer who passed his PhD oral exam in flying colors on June 5, 2018, and is now Dr. Carey!!
  • Lara Gamble (Ph.D. 1996) to Lead UW Molecular Analysis Facility
    UW Bioengineering Associate Research Professor Lara Gamble has been named director of the UW Molecular Analysis Facility (MAF), a fully-staffed instrumentation facility with extensive microscopy, spectroscopy and surface science capabilities. Dr. Gamble, a surface analysis expert, succeeds long-time director David G. Castner, UW professor of chemical engineering and bioengineering, who is retiring.   • Dr. Eric Karp publishes his first paper in Science!
    Former group member Eric (PhD 2012), now at NREL, is first author on the paper “Renewable acrylonitrile production” that just appeared in Science Magazine describing a catalytic process for renewable acrylonitrile production, which holds promise for contributing to clean production of this major chemical.  Congratulations, Eric!
  • José Rodriguez publishes 7th paper in Science
    José A. Rodriguez, Prof. Campbell’s first Ph.D. student who now leads a large research group at Brookhaven National Lab, just published a paper in Science Magazine that describes a highly active new catalyst for the water-gas shift reaction (a key element in many current and proposed energy technologies). This is his 7th paper in Science, including 5 Research Articles and 2 Comments. That is an amazing accomplishment. Congratulations, José! We’re proud of you.
  • Wei Zhang celebrated for West Graduate Fellowship
    Wei Zhang (second from the left) celebrated with the other recipients of the Lloyd E. and Florence M. West Endowed Fellowship in Chemistry and the donor, Ms. West at the 2017 annual Chemistry Department Awards Dinner.  
  • Campbell group’s citations nearly 1400 for 2016!
    According to the ISI Web of Science, publications by C.T. Campbell were cited over 1350 times in 2016. His Hirsch h-index is now 74.
  • Former postdoc Kalle Ernst helped with 2016 Nobel Prize
    Former group postdoc Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Ernst (nicknamed “Kalle”) helped contribute to this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry that went to Ben Feringa and others.  Ernst is the other senior co-author on Feringa’s seminal paper “Electrically driven directional motion of a four-wheeled molecule on a metal surface” which was published Nov 2011 in Nature. Ernst and his group supplied the exceptional scanning tunneling microscope images of the motion of this “molecular car” shown in that report. Way to go, Kalle!! Ernst was interviewed about his contributions by media in Zurich, Switzerland where he now lives.
  • Campbell wins Gauss Professorship
    Charles T.  Campbell was awarded the 2016-17 Gauss Professorship of the Göttingen Academy of Science, Germany, joining a list of impressive past winners. This award is named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, the German mathematician who had an exceptional influence in many fields of mathematics and science (e.g., Gauss’s Theorem, Gauss’s Law) and is ranked as one of history’s most influential mathematicians.
  • Jennifer Shumaker-Parry wins R.W. Teaching Award
    Former PhD student Dr. Jennifer Shumaker-Parry, in addition to being recognized by the R.W. Parry Teaching Award, was recently promoted to Professor of Chemistry at the University of Utah. Her group’s research efforts are focused on the development of plasmonic structures and nanoparticle assemblies with tunable optical properties and surface plasmon resonance-based sensing and spectroscopy platforms, particularly for biomolecule analysis.
  • Campbell elected Fellow of the AVS

  • Campbell wins 2015 AVS Medard W. Welch Award
    The Medard W. Welch Award recognizes continual outstanding research over 10 years in fields of interest to the AVS. This top AVS award was established in 1969 and presented to Charlie Cambell in 2015 for his “seminal contributions to determining accurate adsorption energetics and for developing key concepts for the analysis of important catalytic reactions.” Learn more about this award and see a list of past recipients and read Charlie’s award recipient interview transcript.
  • Prof. Steven Tait gets tenure at IU
    Former member Steven L. Tait (Ph.D. 2005) was promoted from Assistant to Associate Professor with tenure at Indiana University, effective Fall 2015. Way to go, Steve!
  • DOE EFRC Proposal Gets Funded
    The Campbell Group was granted funding for 4 years along in a collaborative proposal with the University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, Argonne National Lab and PNNL. These groups will form the Energy Frontier Research Center (EFRC) Inorganometallic Catalyst Design Center (ICDC), devoted to computationally guided discovery of a new class of energy science-relevant catalytic materials and the underlying structure-function relationships that will guide further catalyst discovery.  
  • DOE grant gets funded
    Unofficial word was received this week that the group’s renewal application to DOE Office of Basic Energy Sciences got funded! This is an individual-investigator grant (PI = CT Campbell) for three years of funding, entitled “Supported Metal Nanoparticles: Correlating Structure with Catalytic Function through Energetics.”
  • Dr. Lara Gamble wins 2014 AVS ASSD Award
    Dr. Lara Gamble (Ph.D. 2016) won the AVS Applied Surface Science Division (ASSD) Peter M. A. Sherwood Mid-Career Professional Award recognizing her achievement and exceptional progress in research and development. Check out more information about the AVS ASSD Award. Congratulations Lara!
  • Campbell’s NSF Proposal gets funded!
    An individual-investigator grant entitled “Sustainable Chemistry:  Energies of Adsorbed Catalytic Intermediates on Transition Metal Surfaces” was funded on June 3, 2014.
  • Trent Silbaugh passes dissertation!
    Trent Silbaugh passed his PhD Final Exam on May 15, 2014. Congratulations!
  • Dr. Nancy J Ruzycki receives 2014 Faculty Excellence Award
    Former Postdoc Dr. Nancy Ruzycki received the 2014 Faculty Excellence Award from the Department of Material Science and Engineering at the University of Florida. This award is presented to encourage and reward excellence, innovation and effectiveness in education, research and service activities.
  • Campbell Group calorimetry experiments highlighted in C&EN
