Greer Sullivan
Greer is a native of Mississippi, received her undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary in Virginia and her MD degree from the University of Mississippi. She completed her internship at Baylor College of Medicine and her psychiatry residency at UCLA. In 1985, she was fortunate to be selected as one of 25 physicians nationally from all areas of medicine for the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program, a fellowship that trains physicians in health services policy. After completing this fellowship and a MS degree in health services from the UCLA School of Public Health, she became a faculty member at UCLA. While in Los Angeles, she practiced psychiatry part-time but spent most of her time doing health policy research at RAND Corporation, a well-known, not for profit health policy Òthink tankÓ in Santa Monica.
In 1998, Dr. Sullivan experienced an interesting culture shift when she relocated from California to Arkansas. Soon after arriving, she became the first Mental Health Product Line Manager for VISN 16. Subsequently, she applied for and received a VA-funded center, the Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) based in the South Central VA Healthcare Network. She remains the only woman MIRECC Director which now includes 10 MIRECC programs nationally. Despite many offers to relocate, Dr. Sullivan chooses to remain in the South where she feels her contributions have the potential to have the greatest impact on health care.
