{"id":955,"date":"2017-04-21T23:11:16","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T23:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cdbrm\/wordpress\/?page_id=955"},"modified":"2021-03-08T11:03:02","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T19:03:02","slug":"investigator-profile-kai-yu","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cdbrm\/wordpress\/research-labs-center-for-developmental-biology-and-regenerative-medicine\/yu-lab\/investigator-profile-kai-yu\/","title":{"rendered":"Investigator Profile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kai Yu &#8211; PhD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cdbrm\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/kai-yu.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2165\" width=\"195\" height=\"176\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Yu&nbsp;is an acting assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine and a member of the Seattle Children&#8217;s Research Institute&#8217;s Center for Developmental Biology and Regenerative Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Yu, who was trained in Dr. David Ornitz&#8217;s lab at Washington University School of Medicine, has focused on the function of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) in skeletal development and pathogenesis of human craniosynostosis. At Seattle Children&#8217;s, Dr. Yu&#8217;s primary research interests focus on molecular, cellular and morphogenetic mechanisms of normal secondary palate morphogenesis and the pathogenesis of cleft palate. He is also investigating molecular and cellular mechanisms of midfacial hypoplasia caused by mutations in FGFRs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;As a developmental biologist, my goal is to translate knowledge gained from animal model studies into clinical treatments of human birth defects. I am particularly interested in cleft palate, one of the most common birth defects. Although cleft palate can be corrected by surgical treatments after birth, patients with cleft palate need multidisciplinary care and follow-up treatment of complications from birth to adulthood. At Seattle Children&#8217;s, I combine mouse genetics and state-of-the-art three-dimensional imaging technologies to understand palate morphogenesis during embryonic development and to investigate how various genetic and environmental risk factors disturb normal development to cause cleft palate formation.
