Greetings to all UW Department of Communication graduates, families, and friends. We are so excited to be able to host the ceremony and celebrate the achievements of our graduates in-person this year. The Class of 2022 endured extraordinary circumstances, and we are grateful to celebrate your time at the UW!
The UW Department of Communication Graduation Celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 07, 2022 in the Alaska Airlines Arena at the Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The ceremony will run from 1 - 3 PM.
Our keynote speaker will be Naomi Ishisaka who is the Assistant Managing Editor for Diversity, Inclusion and Staff Development and the Social Justice Columnist for The Seattle Times. She is a journalist and photographer who focuses on racial equity and social justice. In 2020, she was awarded first place in the Best in the West competition for Special Topics Column Writing for her work in The Seattle Times and in 2021 she won second place for social justice columns from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Her writing and photography have appeared in The Seattle Times, Seattle Magazine, City Arts, ColorsNW Magazine, Seattle Globalist, South Seattle Emerald and other publications. Graduation Celebration Event Schedule
11:45 AM Students may start arriving for name cards and procession line up (lower entrance of the Alaska Airlines arena; wayfinding signage and staff will guide students accordingly)
12:00 PM Seating* opens for guests (*please note that only students, faculty, staff, and GradImages photographers will be permitted on the court-floor. Guests must remain in their seats, or out in the concourse, before and during the ceremony)
1:00 PM Procession begins
3:00 PM Celebration concludes

- Eligibility
- Graduates who earned their degrees in Autumn 2021, or Winter 2021, and students who have a reasonable expectation of graduating in Spring 2022 or Summer 2022 are eligible to participate.
- UW Commencement
- Students are also welcome (not required) to participate in the UW Commencement Ceremony* at Husky Stadium on Saturday, June 13. For more information, please visit the UW Commencement webpage. **Please note that this is separate from your Communication Graduation registration.
- Academic Apparel
- Students are not required to wear academic regalia - such as a cap and gown - in order to participate in the Department of Communication Graduation Celebration; however most students in the past have.
- For students who would like to wear academic regalia, please go to the UW Commencement web page for ordering instructions and other information. Please note, all Husky Stadium Commencement participants must be attired in the appropriate academic apparel (on June 13) as outlined on the UW Commencement webpage.
- Diplomas
- Diplomas are mailed to the address that students select in MyUW (local or permanent), two to three months following graduation. The Department of Communication does not manage the mailing of diplomas, so please contact Graduation and Academic Records with any questions
- Security
- All students will be visually inspected upon entry to the lining up area. Be prepared to open your gown for visual inspection. No alcohol is allowed. We encourage you to not bring other bags or purses* as there is no secure location to store them and they are not allowed on the field. Please leave them with your guests.
- *Please note that ALL bags and purses will be inspected upon entry to the arena. Packages need to be unwrapped or wrapped in such a way that the contents inside can be seen. Any items deemed by the University of Washington staff to be inappropriate or possibly disruptive of other guests’ enjoyment are prohibited. Violators are subject to removal from the stadium and to applicable disciplinary action and/or legal action.

- Please visit the UW Commencement webpage for information regarding parking, including disability parking.
- Food and Drinks Policy
- Guests are permitted to bring factory sealed (non-alcoholic/no glass) beverages, and single servings of food, if they choose. Waste receptacles will be available throughout the building
