{"id":582,"date":"2023-04-13T11:19:51","date_gmt":"2023-04-13T18:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/globalhealth\/cfar\/?post_type=funding&#038;p=582"},"modified":"2025-02-03T13:28:59","modified_gmt":"2025-02-03T21:28:59","slug":"cfar-mentored-international-investigator-award","status":"publish","type":"funding","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cfar\/funding\/cfar-mentored-international-investigator-award\/","title":{"rendered":"CFAR Mentored International Investigator Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Purpose<\/h3>\n<p>The purpose of the UW\/Fred Hutch Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cfar\/funding\/cfar-mentored-international-investigator-award\/\">Mentored International Investigator Award (MIIA)<\/a> is to encourage international early-stage investigators (at an advanced stage of training or recently independent) to conduct independent research with close mentorship from UW\/Fred Hutch CFAR faculty. This research should ultimately lead to acquiring preliminary data to obtain funding to continue their HIV\/AIDS research careers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Funding Available<\/h3>\n<p>Awards will be up to\u00a0<strong>$20,000\/year (direct costs)<\/strong>. Applicants may apply for up to 2 years of funding. Please note that for those requesting a two-year project, second year funding is contingent upon demonstration of satisfactory progress during year one. Please see the RFA for detailed budget development guidelines and restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Applicant Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>Applicants must:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Be stationed in <u>and<\/u> a citizen or permanent resident of an <a href=\"https:\/\/datahelpdesk.worldbank.org\/knowledgebase\/articles\/906519-world-bank-country-and-lending-groups\">Eligible Low or Middle Income Country<\/a>. Eligibility does not extend to individuals who have dual citizenship or permanent residency outside of an <a href=\"https:\/\/datahelpdesk.worldbank.org\/knowledgebase\/articles\/906519-world-bank-country-and-lending-groups\">Eligible Low or Middle Income Country<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Have an MD or PhD or equivalent terminal degree (including an MBChB)<\/li>\n<li>Have not had a NIH R01 <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/glossary.htm#R01EquivalentGrant\">or equivalent<\/a>\u00a0grant in HIV.<\/li>\n<li>Have an appropriate appointment, as follows:\n<ol>\n<li>early-stage faculty (including acting positions), <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>scientist completing a fellowship, <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>senior post-doctoral fellow initiating a new area of HIV-related research that will form a basis for their independent program, <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>faculty-equivalent investigator at an international organization whose primary mission is research.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have a primary project mentor who is appointed at a U.S.-based CFAR affiliate (University of Washington, Fred Hutch, Seattle Children\u2019s, Access to Advanced Health Institute, University of Hawai\u2019i at M\u0101noa). <em>NOTE: In-country co-mentors are <strong>strongly encouraged<\/strong>\u00a0but not required in order to apply<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Be a UW\/Fred Hutch CFAR <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cfar\/get-involved\/cfar-membership\">member<\/a>, or have <a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cfar\/get-involved\/cfar-membership\">applied for membership<\/a> at the time of proposal submission.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Applicants may submit only one application to this program per cycle.\u00a0Only individual Primary Investigators (PIs) are eligible to apply; we do not allow Co-PIs to apply.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants may resubmit revised proposals for other CFAR award programs.\u00a0We also accept applicant resubmissions of prior-year MIIA proposals that have been revised to address previous MIIA reviewer critiques.<\/p>\n<p>Contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:cfardev@uw.edu\">cfardev@uw.edu<\/a>\u00a0if you have questions about eligibility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Project Eligibility<\/h3>\n<p>Eligible HIV-related research is defined broadly and includes basic science, clinical, epidemiological, behavioral, and implementation science research.\u00a0We can only accept applications in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-15-137.html\">NIH\u2019s HIV research high or medium priority areas<\/a>. \u00a0Please refer to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/cfar\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/core-program\/user219\/OCE\/CFAR%20Clinical%20Clearance%20Guide.pdf\">CFAR Clinical Clearance guidelines<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0No human participant\/patient work may be initiated until NIH clinical clearance approval is received.\u00a0\u00a0If you are considering a study involving approved drugs and\/or standard-of-care, please contact <a href=\"mailto:cfardev@uw.edu\">cfardev@uw.edu<\/a>\u00a0to determine whether your proposed project would be eligible for funding through CFAR.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Mentoring<\/h3>\n<p>Applications must include a mentoring plan and letter of support from a primary project mentor who is appointed at a U.S.-based CFAR affiliate (University of Washington, Fred Hutch, Seattle Children\u2019s, Access to Advanced Health Institute, University of Hawai\u2019i at M\u0101noa). Applicants are also <strong>strongly encouraged<\/strong> to identify in-country co-mentors while preparing their proposal.
