Saint so-and-so?<br \/>\nThey all blend together<br \/>\n(\u201cMaria\u201d is always a safe bet)<\/p>\n<p>But they each have their own flares in my memory,<br \/>\nlike the flicker of votive candles<br \/>\nreflecting off the cheeks of a praying woman.<\/p>\n<p>One is gilded in El Dorado magnificence<br \/>\nand LCD moonbeams make it glitter.<br \/>\nWas that where the bird was?<\/p>\n<p>An uneven squeak of shoes echoes on marble\u2014<br \/>\nan man with a limp, hushes when<br \/>\nhe gets down to pray.<\/p>\n<p>Green and purple shafts of light<br \/>\ncoming from the stained-glass windows are<br \/>\nlike a manufactured Aurora Borealis.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite: starlight on the ceiling<br \/>\npainted in gold<br \/>\nlights up when the clouds pass.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dedicated to and with help from the writers studying abroad in Rome, Autumn 2018 A bird flies onto the ledge of the church\u2019s window.
