{"id":396,"date":"2010-02-27T11:53:20","date_gmt":"2010-02-27T19:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/csclab\/?p=396"},"modified":"2010-02-27T11:53:20","modified_gmt":"2010-02-27T19:53:20","slug":"nintendo-gets-in-on-the-e-reader-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/csclab\/2010\/02\/nintendo-gets-in-on-the-e-reader-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Nintendo gets in on the e-reader action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The convergence of different types of functionality and platforms continues to generate interesting new devices. \u00a0While the iPhone remains one of the stand-out devices that converged loads of stuff in one place, it&#8217;s still not an ideal gaming platform. \u00a0Other phones that attempted to offer high-quality gaming experiences never caught on for a variety of reasons, so maybe the solution is to start with a gaming platform instead!<\/p>\n<p>Enter the <a title=\"Wired describes e-reader capabilities of the DSi XL\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/gadgetlab\/2010\/02\/nintendo-e-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo DSi XL<\/a>. \u00a0It will include e-reader capabilities, but in a slightly strange, totally Nintendo way (<a title=\"Bloomberg on DSi XL e-reader capability\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=aDS7QBYw4yJc\" target=\"_blank\">cartridge-based only<\/a>). \u00a0Check out the Wired review of the DSi XL <a title=\"Wired review of DSi XL\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/reviews\/product\/pr_dsi_xl\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Hint: They loved it.<\/p>\n<p>Also of note: The iPad is offering original games from big-name publishers and the DSi XL is offering e-reader functionality and books on cartridge because they can. \u00a0The DSi XL isn&#8217;t meant to take down the Kindle or anything, but the device itself is much better positioned to sell in the millions because it can do multiple things pretty well (or well enough, maybe). \u00a0I am wondering when the analog-era backlash of devices will really catch on and people will embrace (out of choice, not necessity) the idea of owning dedicated devices rather than multi-use devices.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be hanging onto my <a title=\"Grandmaster Flash in action\" href=\"http:\/\/passionweiss.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/grandmaster_flash05.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Technics Grandmaster<\/a> for a while longer, that&#8217;s all I know.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The convergence of different types of functionality and platforms continues to generate interesting new devices. \u00a0While the iPhone remains one of the stand-out devices that converged loads of stuff in one place, it&#8217;s still not an ideal gaming platform. \u00a0Other phones that attempted to offer high-quality gaming experiences never caught on for a variety of reasons, so maybe the solution is to start with a gaming platform instead!
