Spring Quarter and the UW Cherry Blossoms have arrived!\u00a0 We are running our normal services. We are in-person for consulting drop-in’s at Savery Hall 119 and also providing online services during our daytime drop-in hours. To access us online during daytime hours (basically 8AM to 5PM) just send a note to CSSCR@uw.edu with a brief description of your problem and we will make contact via email to set up a zoom meeting. We are running an evening online consulting service from 6PM to 9PM Monday through Thursday; this is an online service only. To access help in the evening just send an email note to csscr_evening@uw.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n Our Main Office (Savery 110) and the drop-in computer lab (Savery 118) are open from 8AM to 6PM; Friday’s until 5PM.\u00a0 \u00a0Our two computer classroom labs are open for reservations during our daytime hours; just send a note to csscr@uw.edu if you wish to reserve classroom space.<\/p>\n Spring Quarter we will offer a set of in-person workshops (see list of workshops below).\u00a0 These workshops are generally of an introductory nature and designed to get you started on a variety of software and are in person. The workshop will cover the basic organization of R and RStudio, where to find good help references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is ideal for users who have little or no experience with R.<\/p>\n ****************************<\/p>\n Introduction to QGIS<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: \u00a0 This course will provide students with a broad overview of what geographic information systems (GISs) are and how social scientists can benefit from using them in their research. Students will explore basic GIS concepts through hands-on exercises using QGIS, a widely used GIS software package, as well as freely available data sets.<\/p>\n **************************** Description:\u00a0 This introductory workshop is designed to introduce you to basic Python commands, including reading in datasets, basic data manipulation, and common statistical tests and procedures. This will also cover common Python IDEs and comparisons to other popular programming languages such as Stata and R.\u00a0 This class will be ideal for users who have little to no experience with Python.<\/p>\n ****************************<\/p>\n Data Wrangling in R<\/strong><\/p>\n Description:\u00a0 This workshop will cover some of R’s useful tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to learning Hadley Wickham’s excellent “tidyr” and “dplyr” packages. Attendees are assumed to have basic familiarity with R\/RStudio.<\/p>\n ****************************<\/p>\n Direct Coding of Audio Data using ATLAS.ti<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: This workshop focuses on the ability to directly code audio data (e.g. interviews) using ATLAS.ti software. Direct coding of the data can make transcripting unnecessary, hence, can be initiated soon after data collection. If time permits, some visualization techniques ( such as Word Clouds) will be introduced. The workshop assumes a base knowledge of ATLAS.ti . While the workshop does not require having access to Atlas-ti it is helpful. For UW students\/researchers\/faculty access to ATLAS.ti on CSDE terminal server is available, please contact CSDE (Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology).<\/p>\n ****************************<\/p>\n Introduction to Text Analysis using R<\/strong><\/p>\n Description:\u00a0 This workshop will introduce the basics of text analysis in R using the tools from the “tidytext” package. Participants will learn how to manage and clean text data, perform sentiment analysis, and calculate descriptive statistics on a body of text.\u00a0 \u00a0Basic level of using R\/RStudio is assumed.<\/p>\n **************************** Description: \u00a0 This CSSCR workshop introduces students to ways of producing effect graphs and visualization graphs in R.\u00a0 Topics covered will include basic plotting functions (e.g. histograms, scatter plots), production of multi-panel graphs, and various means of exporting graphs to other presentation packages.\u00a0 A basic user level of R \/ RStudio is assumed.<\/p>\n ******************************* Description: \u00a0 This workshop introduces the SPSS statistical package including reading in datafiles, as well as basic data management and introductory statistical procedures.
