Welcome back to Autumn Quarter 2023 and the beginning of the new academic year. CSSCR is back from the summer break and operating on our normal schedule. We are running in-person drop-in consulting in Savery Hall 119 from 8AM to 6PM Monday through Thursday and 8AM to 5PM on Friday. You can also access online consulting during these hours by sending a note describing your problem to CSSCR@uw.edu. We will also continue our evening virtual service from 6PM to 9PM Monday through Thursday. On Friday’s we close all consulting services at 5PM.<\/p>\n
Our Main Office (Savery Hall 110) and drop-in computer lab (Savery Hall 118) are open from 8AM to 5PM.\u00a0And our two computer classroom labs are open during these times for reservations.<\/p>\n
As always, we will offer a set of in-person workshops (see list below).\u00a0 These workshops are generally of an introductory nature and designed to get you started on a variety of statistical software platforms.\u00a0Registration for the workshops is provided below.<\/p>\n
Also don’t forget we offer data services and data access help. We belong to Michigan’s ICPSR data repository and have experience with a wide range of public (and restricted), as well as US Census datasets.<\/p>\n

CSSCR Workshop Offerings Autumn Quarter 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n ***Workshops are listed in the order of the dates they are delivered***<\/p>\n ******************************* Introduction to R using R Studio<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: This workshop will teach you how to get started with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The workshop will cover the basic organization of R and RStudio, where to find good help references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is ideal for users who have little or no experience with R.<\/p>\n **************************** Description: \u00a0 This course will provide students with a broad overview of what geographic information systems (GISs) are and how social scientists can benefit from using them in their research. Students will explore basic GIS concepts through hands-on exercises using QGIS, a widely used GIS software package, as well as freely available data sets.<\/p>\n **************************** Description: \u00a0 This workshop provides a brief, practical introduction to working in ATLAS.ti, covering basic terminology and functionality of the program. This will include importing text documents, coding and annotating documents, and exploring relationships through analysis and query tools. The course assumes no familiarity with Atlas.ti<\/p>\n **************************** Description:\u00a0 This workshop will cover some of R’s useful tools for data management and exploration. Most of class will be devoted to learning Hadley Wickham’s excellent “tidyr” and “dplyr” packages. Attendees are assumed to have basic familiarity with R\/RStudio.<\/p>\n ***************************** Description: \u00a0 This workshop introduces the SPSS statistical package including reading in data files, as well as basic data management and introductory statistical procedures. Additional topics include computing and recoding variables and selecting and filtering cases.<\/p>\n **************************** Description:\u00a0 This introductory workshop is designed to introduce you to basic Python commands, including reading in datasets, basic data manipulation, and common statistical tests and procedures. This will also cover common Python IDEs and comparisons to other popular programming languages such as Stata and R.\u00a0 This class will be ideal for users who have little to no experience with Python.<\/p>\n **************************** Description: This workshop will teach you how to get started with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio.
