Spring has arrived!\u00a0 CSSCR is operating at pretty much normal levels and look forward to serving our old and new friends this Spring.\u00a0 We are running our in-person drop-in consulting office in Savery Hall 119 as in the past except we have removed evening in-person hours and are only online in the evening from 6PM to 9PM Monday through Thursday.\u00a0 Our Main Office (Savery 110) and drop-in computer lab (Savery 118) are open from 8AM to 5PM.\u00a0 \u00a0And our two computer classroom labs are open for reservations per usual.<\/p>\n
While we are fully in-person, we are still providing access to online consulting during the hours from 8AM to 5PM — just send a note describing your problem\/request to CSSCR@uw.edu.\u00a0 For consulting online after 5PM send a note to CSSCR_evening@uw.edu.\u00a0 You will be contacted in return to set up a zoom meeting or asked additional questions to ensure you are routed to the best consultant to serve your needs.<\/p>\n
Also this Spring Quarter we will once again offer in-person workshops on a variety of topics (see list below).\u00a0 These workshops are generally of an introductory nature and designed to get you started on a variety of software.\u00a0 \u00a0Registration for the workshops is provided below.<\/p>\n

CSSCR Short Workshop Offerings Spring Quarter 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n ***Workshops are listed in the order of the dates they are delivered***<\/p>\n *****************************<\/p>\n Introduction to SPSS<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: \u00a0 This workshop introduces the SPSS statistical package including reading in datafiles, as well as basic data management and introductory statistical procedures. Additional topics include computing and recoding variables and selecting and filtering cases.<\/p>\n *******************************<\/p>\n Introduction to R using R Studio<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: This workshop will teach you how to get started with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio. The workshop will cover the basic organization of R and RStudio, where to find good help references, and how to begin a basic analysis. This class is ideal for users who have little or no experience with R.<\/p>\n *************************<\/p>\n Introduction to GIS\/ArcGIS<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: \u00a0 This course will provide students with a broad overview of what geographic information systems (GISs) are and how social scientists can benefit from using them in their research. Students will explore basic GIS concepts through hands-on exercises using ArcGIS, a widely used GIS software package, as well as freely available data sets.<\/p>\n ****************************<\/p>\n Introduction to Python<\/strong><\/p>\n Description:\u00a0 This introductory workshop is designed to introduce you to basic Python commands, including reading in datasets, basic data manipulation, and common statistical tests and procedures. This will also cover common Python IDEs and comparisons to other popular programming languages such as Stata and R.\u00a0 This class will be ideal for users who have little to no experience with Python.<\/p>\n ****************************<\/p>\n Basic Graphics and Data Visualization in R<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: \u00a0 This CSCCR workshop introduces students to ways of producing effect graphs and visualization graphs in R.\u00a0 Topics covered will include basic plotting functions (e.g. histograms, scatter plots), production of multi-panel graphs, and various means of exporting graphs to other presentation packages.\u00a0 A basic user level of R \/ Rstudio is assumed.<\/p>\n *******************************<\/p>\n Introduction to R using R Studio<\/strong><\/p>\n Description: This workshop will teach you how to get started with R using the free integrated development environment called Rstudio. This will include importing text documents, coding and annotating documents, and exploring relationships through analysis and query tools. The course assumes no familiarity with Atlas.ti<\/p>\n ***************************<\/p>\n Introduction to Text Analysis using R<\/strong><\/p>\n Description:\u00a0 This workshop will introduce the basics of text analysis in R using the tools from the “tidytext” package.
