This ongoing collection of papers will detail the research findings of a project that is seeking\u00a0to build the evidence-base around the feasibiliy of disrupting the transmission of soil-transmitted helminths.<\/p>\n<p>Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are estimated to effect approximately\u00a01.45billion people globally. These infections\u00a0can cause chronic and debilitating effects on human health and development. Chronic STH infections can contribute to malnutrition, iron-deficiency anemia, and mental and physical growth delay.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonntd.org\/research\/projects-search\/deworm3-demonstrating-the-feasibility-of-sth-elimination\">DeWorm3 project<\/a>\u00a0is conducting five-year cluster randomised trial in Benin, India and Malawi to\u00a0test the feasibility of interrupting the transmission of STH infections and to develop effective strategies for scaling-up transmission interruption programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0US$27 million initiative\u00a0is a\u00a0research collaboration led by the Natural History Museum which involves fellow LCNTDR members from Imperial College London and London School of Hygiene &amp; Tropical Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collections.plos.org\/deworm3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">PLOS NTDs: DeWorm3 collection\u00a0<span class=\"ext\"><span class=\"element-invisible\">(link is external)<\/span><\/span><\/a>compiles numerous studies on STHs, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0005988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">A protocol to evaluate the sustainability, scalability, and replicability of STH transmission interruption<span class=\"ext\"><span class=\"element-invisible\">(link is external)<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0006166\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">A protocol to conduct a series of cluster randomized trials in Benin, India and Malawi to evaluate the impact of biannual community-wide mass drug administration (MDA) with albendazole compared to the current standard of care<span class=\"ext\"><span class=\"element-invisible\">(link is external)<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosntds\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pntd.0006114\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-extlink=\"\">An analysis of the impact of different diagnostic tools to aid in STH transmission elimination<span class=\"ext\"><span class=\"element-invisible\">(link is external)<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additional articles will be added to the collection as the STH elimination evidence base continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonntd.org\/research\/projects-search\/deworm3-demonstrating-the-feasibility-of-sth-elimination\">Click here for more information on the DeWorm3 project<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Read the full story on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonntd.org\/news\/deworm3-collection-launched-in-plos-ntds\">LondonNTD<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Read the full story on LondonNTD The\u00a0Deworm3 Project\u00a0has launched the\u00a0DeWorm3 collection(link is external)\u00a0in\u00a0PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases journal.
