A study in Diabetes Care showed that last year’s total estimated cost of diagnosed diabetes in the US was $327 billion, including $90 billion in reduced productivity and $237 billion in direct medical costs. Researchers also found that patients with diabetes had average medical expenditures of about $16,750 annually, with approximately $9,600 of the expenses attributed to diabetes, which is 2.3 times higher than the costs expected from individuals without diabetes.
