P&F Awards: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to hold a UW faculty position to receive P&F funding?

Yes, recipients must be UW faculty at July 1, 2024, to be eligible for P&F funding (see letter of intent form for applicable faculty ranks). Postdoctoral fellows are ineligible for P&F funding.

Do I need to be a UWMDI, DRC and/or NORC affiliate investigator in order to submit an application?

No, however if you compete successfully for a P&F award, you must then become an affiliate of the center that provides the funds.

I am not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Am I still eligible for P&F funding?

Yes, you are eligible for DRC, NORC and UWMDI P&F funding.

Can I submit a full application without submitting a letter of intent?

No, submission of a letter of intent is mandatory in order to establish eligibility. Only eligible applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.

Can I submit more than one proposal for P&F funding?

Yes, but only if the applications differ significantly from one another.

I am an established/senior investigator. Can I apply for P&F funding?

Yes, as long as you are new to the nutrition, diabetes, and/or obesity fields. Alternatively, if you already study nutrition, diabetes, and/or obesity, you must propose to develop an innovative project related to these research areas that differs significantly from your ongoing interests.

Do I need to specify which center (UWMDI, DRC or NORC) is most appropriate for my P&F project?

No, this will be determined by the joint P&F programs committee.

Can my budget include a sub-contract to pay for services received from a non-UW collaborator or core?

Yes, but any fees associated with setting up the sub-contract will be deducted from direct costs.

Can P&F funds be used for salary support?

Yes, the awards can be used for principal investigator salary. A maximum of 50% of the total award funds (i.e. $25,000) may be requested for principal investigator salary, however any amount above 20% will require detailed justification. Awards may also be used for technical support. Salary support for postdoctoral fellows or graduate students is not allowed. Salary support for any non-principal investigator faculty salary must be well justified.

What if there is scientific overlap between my P&F application and other pending grants?

Any scientific overlap with pending grants must be fully disclosed in the full P&F application, and abstracts of these grants must be provided.

When will I find out if my application will be funded?

Funding decisions are typically made by mid May. You will be notified via email as soon as final decisions have been reached.

Can I submit my application via email instead of uploading it to the DRC website?

No, letters of intent and full applications must be submitted via the DRC website. For questions about the online submission process, contact Ellen Cottingham (ecott17@uw.edu).

At what time of day is the submission deadline?

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM PST on the due date.

If I have already received a P&F award can I still apply?

Yes, if you have received a P&F award previously from the joint program you are still eligible to receive an award from another institution (e.g. if you have been awarded a P&F from the DRC you are still eligible to receive a new P&F award from the NORC or UWMDI).
