Samuel and Althea Stroum Endowed Graduate Fellowship Award Call 2019<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n

The University of Washington (UW) Graduate School in conjunction with the Diabetes Research Center (Diabetes Research Center) is soliciting applications for a graduate fellowship designed to broaden participation in research related to diabetes and its complications at the UW.\u00a0 This fellowship is made possible by an endowment from Samuel and Althea Stroum, who are UW benefactors and generous supporters of other civic and charitable organizations in the Seattle area. Selection of the fellowship recipient will be made by the Dean of the UW Graduate School upon recommendation from the UW Diabetes Research Center, and will be based on academic merit, research training environment, and relevance of the applicant\u2019s graduate research to diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Purpose:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>To support the training of promising graduate students in diabetes-related research.<\/p>\n

Eligibility:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any registered UW full-time graduate student pursuing diabetes-related research in a Ph.D. degree-granting program.\u00a0 Eligible disciplines include but are not limited to the basic and health sciences, social sciences and arts\/humanities.\u00a0 Eligible applicants must have passed their general exam prior to the funding start date of July 1, 2019.\u00a0 (Students in M.D., Pharm.D., D.D.S. and J.D. programs are not eligible.\u00a0 Masters Degree applicants may be eligible in certain departments and require prior approval).<\/p>\n

Support:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>One award of $20,000 toward graduate student stipend and benefits is available.\u00a0 The tenure of the fellowship is one year.\u00a0 Carryovers and extensions are not permitted.\u00a0 (Students in fee-based graduate programs should check with their program administrator for questions related to tuition waivers).<\/em>\u00a0 <\/strong>Funding begins July 1, 2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Application:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Prospective applicants must submit a mandatory<\/strong><\/u> Letter of Intent (LOI) that summarizes pertinent information needed to assess eligibility.\u00a0In addition to the Letter of Intent, applicants will be required to submit a list of suitable reviewers.\u00a0Please complete the\u00a02019 Stroum Fellowship Letter of Intent Form<\/a>\u00a0and Reviewer Nomination Form<\/a>.\u00a0LOIs submitted in other formats will not be accepted. LOIs and reviewer nomination forms are due by January 4, 2019\u00a0<\/strong>and are\u00a0to\u00a0be uploaded below.<\/p>\n\n

Eligible applicants will be given detailed instructions regarding the application process.\u00a0 Prospective applicants and their dissertation supervisory committee chairs are encouraged to direct questions regarding eligibility and application procedures to either Dr. Sakeneh Zraika (Director, Pilot and Feasibility Programs) or Dr. Mario Kratz (Associate Director, Pilot and Feasibility Programs) prior to submitting a Letter of Intent.\u00a0 Applications require approval by the applicant’s departmental chairperson and dissertation supervisory committee chair.<\/p>\n

Important<\/u>:<\/em>\u00a0 Approvals for human subjects, animal use and\/or biohazards must be obtained from the appropriate UW review committees prior to initiation of funding but are not required for submitting the application. \u00a0Since procedures for obtaining these approvals can be lengthy, prospective applicants should discuss with their dissertation committee the feasibility of obtaining the necessary approvals prior to the start date of the award.\u00a0 Delayed approvals will not be grounds for an extension of the award.<\/p>\n

Deadline:\u00a0 Applications are due by February 20, 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n
