{"id":5481,"date":"2020-03-02T10:18:53","date_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:18:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/diabetes\/?p=5481"},"modified":"2020-03-02T10:26:05","modified_gmt":"2020-03-02T18:26:05","slug":"http-we-discover-uw-edu-iqya0ah8uhh00d000no2r00-2-4-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/diabetes\/http-we-discover-uw-edu-iqya0ah8uhh00d000no2r00-2-4-2\/","title":{"rendered":"New strategies for prevention of cardiovascular complications of diabetes"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"kc-elm kc-css-168851 kc_row\"><div class=\"kc-row-container  kc-container\"><div class=\"kc-wrap-columns\"><div class=\"kc-elm kc-css-724757 kc_col-sm-4 kc_column kc_col-sm-4\"><div class=\"kc-col-container\"><div class=\"kc-elm kc-css-273703 kc_shortcode kc_single_image\">\n\n        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/diabetes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Bornfeldt-Karin_2.jpg\" class=\"\" alt=\"\" \/>    <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"kc-elm kc-css-328351 kc_col-sm-8 kc_column kc_col-sm-8\"><div class=\"kc-col-container\"><div class=\"kc-elm kc-css-842266 kc_text_block\">\n<div class=\"name-100\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>Dr. Karin Bornfeldt, \u00a0professor of medicine and pathology, Deputy Director of the Diabetes Research Center, has received an Outstanding Investigator Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for her R35 project &#8220;Identifying new strategies for prevention of cardiovascular complications of diabetes.\"<\/p>\n<p>The Outstanding Investigator Award will support Bornfeldt&#8217;s NHLBI research program for seven years, with cumulative funding of more than $7.2 million over the award&#8217;s duration.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;The ability to spend 7 years of uninterrupted research on this topic will be very meaningful because we will have the freedom to pursue research directions most likely to benefit patients,\"<\/em> <em>said Bornfeldt.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Her career has been devoted to the discovery of mechanisms whereby diabetes increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction and stroke), with the goal of discovering new treatment and prevention strategies for the rapidly growing population of people with diabetes worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The Outstanding Investigator Awards are intended for investigators who have an outstanding record of research with contributions to NHLBI&#8217;s research objectives. \u00a0Co-Investigators are Drs.
