The Department of Medicine IT operates a private exchange system to support the unique needs of our users, such as an enhanced spam filter, less restrictive attachment limits, large mailboxes, shared mailboxes or calendars, daily backups, and an improved sync function with smartphones. Among the domains we support are address ending with @medicine.washington.edu, @cardiology.washington.edu, @nephrology.washington.edu, @derm.washington.edu, @kri.washington.edu, @uwmedres.washington.edu, and @neurosurgery.washington.edu.
The Department of Medicine Exchange should not be confused with the UW Medicine Exchange (which is primarily provided to Medical Center staff and clinicians as a calendar-only resource) or the UW Office 365 Exchange (which is provided by UW-IT). For more information on either of those please see the Other Email Options page.

Configuring Outlook Desktop Client
Outlook is the recommended method to check email from work devices. The Department of Medicine Exchange is compatible with Outlook 2010/2013/2016 on Windows and Outlook 2016 for Mac. Outlook is designed to cache all emails to your local device, so for this reason any device with Outlook configured (including personal devices) should be appropriately secured with a strong password and encryption, please see the Device Security page for more information about those procedures. If your device cannot support these requirements or if you would prefer not to configure the device in these methods then the Outlook Web App should be used instead.
Due to the special security concerns of configuring the desktop version of Outlook please Department of Medicine IT Services help desk and a technician would be happy to assist with connecting Outlook as well as ensuring the necessary security controls are in place.
Syncing Mobile Devices
The Department of Medicine Exchange is compatible with a wide variety of mobile devices. Adding this account to a device will make the email, contacts, and calendar available on that device. Any mobile devices which are connected to the Department of Medicine Exchange need to be encrypted and password protected, which is addressed as part of the configuration steps. Devices that do not meed those requirements will be prevented from syncing data to the mobile device. For more information about the security requirements please see the Device Security page.
For help syncing mobile devices with other email options (such as UW Exchange, UW Deskmail, or the UW Medicine Calendars) please see the Other Email Options page.
