{"id":33,"date":"2023-11-03T18:10:14","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T18:10:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/esrg\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2023-11-06T16:59:49","modified_gmt":"2023-11-06T16:59:49","slug":"medications","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/esrg\/medications\/","title":{"rendered":"Medications"},"content":{"rendered":"<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em><strong>Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/strong><\/em>, such as aspirin, naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn), ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), or celecoxib (Celebrex), may be used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Long-term use of NSAIDs may cause stomach ulcers as well as kidney and liver problems.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Analgesics<\/strong><\/em>, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), can relieve pain but don\u2019t have the anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Muscle relaxants<\/strong><\/em>, such as methocarbamol (Robaxin), carisoprodol (Soma) and cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), may be prescribed to control muscle spasms.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Steroids <\/strong><\/em>may be prescribed to reduce the swelling and inflammation of the nerves. They are taken orally (as a Medrol dose pack) in a tapering dosage over a five-day period. It has the advantage of providing almost immediate pain relief within a 24-hour period.<\/li>\n<li>For severe pain, <em><strong>opioids&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>such as Tramadol, hydrocodone (Norco, Vicodin) or oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet) can be considered.
