Twenty-four residents, 13 faculty (composed of family physicians, a psychiatrist, and a pediatrician), a behavioral scientist, clinical pharmacists, and other support personnel staff this community family medicine residency site. The Valley Family Medicine residency program is located a few miles south from downtown Renton. Students participate directly in the full spectrum of patient care of diverse patient panels. Students are also assigned obstetric continuity patients to follow through delivery, postpartum, and newborn care. Students are able to be involved in clinic procedures. They may join the behavioral scientist in doing consultations with residents' patients, including smoking cessation. Students also identify a patient they see in clinic, and then meet later with the behavioral scientist to review genogram use and psychosocial implications for the patient’s care. Students make a site visit to a long-term care facility and spend one day with a hospice visiting nurse. They are scheduled in residency workshops and the residency pediatric consultation clinic. Didactics occur most days of the week on-site and are required 3-4 days per week during the lunchtime hour. Students will set up four individualized “on-call” evening experiences during the clerkship. These experiences may include: a medicine or pediatric clinic patient admission from the ER with the inpatient resident team, following a patient admitted from clinic to the hospital to finish the admission, and identifying term obstetrical patients to be called for labor and delivery.
