Biographical Profile

Laura-Mae Baldwin is a Professor of Family Medicine, a practicing family physician, and the Director of the WWAMI region Practice and Research Network (WPRN), a practice-based research network in the five state Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho region that is a collaboration between the Department of Family Mediine and the Institute of Translational Health Sciences. Dr. Baldwin has established active research partnerships with clinical practices, clinical organizations, and health systems across the WWAMI region, with a focus on collaborative research that implements health care innovations and improves quality of care in real-world primary care setttings. Dr. Baldwin also has served as an investigator at the UW Center for Health Workforce Studies and Rural Health Research Center, bringing expertise in the use of large secondary databases to study racial/ethnic and rural-urban health disparities, cancer prevention and treatment, and perinatal health, all with an eye towards ensuring equitable access to high quality health services across the U.S.

Current Projects

Team-based Safe Opioid Prescribing: Implementing and evaluating a “team-based best practices” approach to safe opioid prescribing for chronic non-cancer pain across 20 rural-serving health clinics in Washington and Idaho. A collaboration led by Group Health Research Institute and funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Healthy Hearts Northwest: Building capacity for quality improvement and testing different support models for decreasing cardiovascular disease risk in primary care practices across Washington, Oregon and Idaho. A collaboration led by Group Health Research Institute and funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

BeneFIT: Collaborating with Medicaid health insurance plans to implement and evaluate a mailed Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) program to increase colorectal cancer screening rates. Funded by the CDC.

WWAMI Practice Transformation Network (PTN): Improving health outcomes for Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) beneficiaries by helping primary care practices transform to better measure and improve quality of care. A collaboration with UW Medicine, funded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation.

Collaboration between the WWAMI region Practice and Research Network and the Pacific Northwest Node of the National Clinical Trials Network: Helping integrate evidence-based behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment into primary care settings. Collaboration with the UW Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute, funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Development of an Electronically Linked Practice Based Research Network in the WWAMI States. Funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Science through the Clinical Translational Science Award mechanism, National Institutes of Health.
