The Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho (WWAMI) Rural Health Research Center conducts policy-oriented research with an emphasis on the rural healthcare workforce and access to care. Established in 1988, the WWAMI RHRC is based in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and works closely with the University of Washington Center for Health Workforce Studies, other departments and schools, the Washington State Department of Health, and in the five WWAMI states.

Major areas of inquiry at the WWAMI RHRC are:

  • training, recruitment, and retention of rural healthcare providers and the content and outcomes of the care they provide,
  • rural access to home health care, and
  • access to therapies and treatments, such as recommended cancer screening and medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder
