2-Day FASD Diagnostic Training for Clinical Teams

This 2-Day Training introduces interdisciplinary clinical teams (or individual members of a clinical team) to the methods used by the Washington State FAS Diagnostic & Prevention Network (FASDPN) to screen, diagnose, and prevent FASD.

Prerequisite: It is highly recommended that trainees first complete the free FASD 4-Digit Code Online Course prior to attending this 2-Day Training. The Online Course will teach trainees the fundamentals of the FASD 4-Digit Diagnostic Code. The 2-Day Training then demonstrates the use of the 4-Digit Code by the University of Washington interdisciplinary FASD diagnostic team.

  • Training Agenda

This 2- training includes didactic lectures, direct observation of two real diagnostic evaluations, and hands-on practice sessions.

Day 1: Thursday (1 pm to 5 pm) Attend lecture provided by Dr. Susan (Astley) Hemingway, FASDPN Director. Topics include: Overview of interdisciplinary approach to FASD diagnosis using the FASD 4-Digit Code. Answer questions trainees may have regarding material presented in the FASD 4-Digit Code Online Course. Introduce trainees to the format of the interdisciplinary diagnostic model used by the FASDPN in preparation for their observation of clinic on Day 2.

Day 2: Friday (8:00 am to 5 pm) Observe the FASDPN interdisciplinary FASD diagnostic team conduct two FASD diagnostic evaluations (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) using the FASD 4-Digit Code. Each 4-hour evaluation includes: 1) a 30-minute case conference; 2) a 2-hour evaluation of the patient by the psychologist, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist, while the caregivers are interviewed by the pediatrician; 3) demonstration of the FAS Facial Photographic Analysis software; 4) derivation of the 4-Digit Code and Patient Intervention Plan; and 5) sharing the diagnostic outcome and intervention plan with the caregivers.

Training Materials: FASD 4-Digit Diagnostic Code (2024), Community Development of an FAS DPN Manual, FAS DPN Clinical Model Manual, A Child with FAS FASDPN Psychometric and Behavior Observations Training Guide.

  • Training Objectives
At the conclusion of this Training, participants will:
  • Know the full spectrum of outcomes caused by prenatal alcohol exposure called Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
  • Recognize the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to FASD diagnosis.
  • Know how to use the (2024) FASD 4-Digit Diagnostic Code created by the FASDPN.
  • Who Provides the Training?

This training is provided by the University of Washington FASDPN interdisciplinary clinical team. This team includes a pediatrician, a psychologist, a speech-language pathologist, an occupational therapist and a public health professional. This clinical team has over 30 years of experience in the field of FASD and has diagnosed over 3,000 patients since the interdisciplinary clinic first opened in 1993.

  • What is the FAS DPN?

The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnostic & Prevention Network (FASDPN) is a network of Washington State community-based clinics linked by the core clinical / research / training clinic at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Each clinic in the network uses the same interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and the same systematic diagnostic method, the FASD 4-Digit Diagnostic Code. The mission of the FASDPN is primary and secondary prevention of FASD through screening, diagnosis, intervention, training, education, public policy and research.

  • Who is the Training Intended For?

The training is designed for clinical teams who wish to establish an interdisciplinary FASD diagnostic clinic in their community using the FASD 4-Digit Diagnostic Code. A clinical team is typically comprised of a medical doctor, psychologist, speech language pathologist and occupational therapist.

All members of a diagnostic team are encouraged to participate in the 2-Day training. We understand that this is not always feasible, thus a subset of the diagnostic team may choose to attend.

Single members of a diagnostic team are also welcome to attend. These individual members are often a new member of an existing FASD diagnostic team or a community professional looking into the feasibility of starting a FASD diagnostic team.

  • Training Location

In Person Training:

The training is conducted at the Institute on Human Development & Disability (IHDD), previously named the Center on Human Development & Disability (CHDD) at the University of Washington in Seattle WA.

Once a training date has been agreed on, trainees must complete and submit the "UW Medicine Application and Agreement for Observational Activities Form" (see link below).

  • In Person Trainees:

    1. Fill out the UWMC Observation Form (including sections 5 and 6 regarding TB and Immunization History and proof of immunization).
    2. Email the Observation Form as one merged PDF to fasdclin@uw.edu to obtain a clinic signature.
    3. Then email the complete/signed Observation Form to the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) to obtain approval: obsvamb@uw.edu.
    4. UWMC will send you and us an email regarding whether your form has been approved or needs more information.

    Zoom Trainees:

    1. Fill out the UWMC Observation Form (do not need to complete sections 5 and 6).
    2. Email to fasdclin@uw.edu to obtain a clinic signature.
    3. Then email the complete/signed form to the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) to obtain approval: obsvamb@uw.edu.
    4. UWMC will send you and us an email regarding your approval status.

Please complete steps 1 through 4 above no later than 3 weeks prior to the date of your training. The UW Medical Center must approve this form before a trainee is permitted to observe or visit the clinic. This takes time, so please submit the form 3 weeks prior to your training date, so approval can be obtained in time for your visit.
