What is a summer Korean Cybersecurity program like?

The Korean Cybersecurity Program at the UW is an opportunity for high school students in the United States to become familiarized with the principles of Cybersecurity, while learning and/or improving their Korean Language Skills.

The video below from the 2017 STARTALK Portuguese Student Program will give you an example of a language and STEM Program at UW.

About

students working on computers

The University of Washington |Seattle| Language Learning Center (LLC) in collaboration with the UW Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity (CIAC), the UW Center for Global Studies, and the Department of Asian Languages and Literature is offering a unique summer camp that combines the areas of cybersecurity and language education in Korean for high school students. This 2023 program is funded by the U.S. National Security Agency and the National Science Foundation. Additional funding has been provided by the UW Center for Global Studies. We are grateful to the support kindly provided by Prof. Marc Dupuis of the Division of Computing & Software Systems at UW Bothell.

Is the program free?

There is no cost to the participants.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible, students must be currently in high school and speak Korean and English at an intermediate level or higher. Heritage students of Korean are encouraged to apply.

What can participants earn?

A Certificate of Completion

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate in the "Essentials from Cybersecurity and Korean" from UW CIAC and the UW LLC.

Official Language Proficiency scores and the Seals of Biliteracy

Students may also earn the Washington State Seal of Biliteracy and may also be eligible for the Global Seal of Biliteracy in Korean. Students will have the opportunity (also free) to take the STAMP 4S language test for their Korean and English language proficiencies. If at a sufficient proficiency level, the results of these tests can be used to earn the Washington State Seal of Biliteracy and/or Global Seal of Biliteracy.

To earn the state Seal, the STAMP 4S score required to earn the state seal is '5' (Intermediate Mid and above).

There are two levels of the Global Seal that can be earned (below are the scores for the STAMP 4S that are required):
Functional Fluency = 5 or higher on all sections (Intermediate-Mid)
Working Fluency = 7 or higher on all sections (Advanced-Low)

What will participants learn in the program? Do they need to be knowledgable about cybersecurity beforehand?

No previous knowledge of cybersecurity is required.

The program will cover the fundamentals of cybersecurity, including key concepts and terms, with an emphasis on online safety.

Participants will explore the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Cybersecurity Workforce Framework and resources such as Cyberseek.org. These resources will introduce students to the incredible demand and opportunities the field offers, as well as the diversity of sub-disciplines they might pursue. The ‘Essentials of Cybersecurity’ series ends with a module on ‘Finding Your Cybersecurity Career Path’ and then helps the student construct their ‘Job Outlook’.

Through the study of cybersecurity participants will learn specialized Korean language and be given many opportunities for peer collaboration and presentational modes.
