Dr. Dan Lessler selected as new Chief Medical Officer for state benefits programs

Posted on April 5th, 2013

Dr. Daniel Lessler has been selected as the new Chief Medical Officer for the state’s Medicaid program and Public Employees Benefits, starting May 13. Dr. Steve Fihn, head of the Division of General Internal Medicine, said "Dan Lessler has been a faculty member in the Division of GIM for two decades.  During that time he has distinguished himself as a superb clinician, devoted teacher and innovative health services investigator.  His most unique accomplishments, however, have been as a leader and advocate for delivering health care to vulnerable and underserved people.

In his local administrative roles that have included directing the Adult Medicine Clinic at Harborview and serving as Senior Associate Medical Director at Harborview, as well as on the national stage, Dan has been widely recognized for developing creative solutions that enable safety net hospitals to better serve these patients.  In his new position as Medical Director for the Washington State Medicaid Program, Dan will bring his considerable knowledge and skills to the critically important task of enhancing and expanding the program as part of the Affordable Care Act.   There is no one better suited for this responsibility.  We are grateful for his manifold contributions to UW and look forward to working with him in his new role."
