Dr. Thomas Gallagher lends support to ending fee-for-service payments

Posted on March 29th, 2013

From DOM Week:

Dr. Thomas Gallagher, professor of medicine (General Internal Medicine) and bioethics & humanities, was one of the commissioners of the National Commission on Physician Payment Reform (NCPPR) that just released a report calling for an end to fee-for-service payment.

In the report, the commission outlines 12 recommendations that will “provide a five-year blueprint for transitioning to a blended payment system that will yield better results for both public and private payers, as well as patients.” The commission also recommends a repeal of the Medicare sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula. The report has been endorsed by the Society of General Internal Medicine, who laid out a plan to advance the commission’s recommendations. This report is also discussed by the chairs of the commission in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
